EIS Installation Checklist for Sun StorageTek SL500 Modular

Storage Library

Customer

Version EIS-DVD:
Date:

It is recommend that the EIS web pages are checked for the latest version of this
checklist prior to commencing the installation.
It is assumed that the installation is carried out with the help of the current
EIS-DVD. See EIS web pages for current information and status.
The idea behind this checklist is to help the installer achieve a "good" installation.
It is assumed that the installer has attended the appropriate training classes.
Although use of a laptop and the StorageTek Library Console (SLC) is not
required to achieve a minimal functioning installation, a laptop running the
StorageTek Library Console (SLC) is highly recommended and should be
considered best practice. Steps in this checklist require it's use.
This checklist can either be used when installing a new server with storage (in
conjunction with appropriate server checklist) or just ArrayStart when adding a
SL500 storage.
It is not intended that this checklist be handed over to the customer.
This checklist refers to the Customer Orientation Checklist.
If ACSLS ( Automated Cartridge System Library Software ) is being used with a
SL500 with LTO5 drives a minimum version of ACSLS 7.3.1 or 8.0.1 is needed.

In contrast to most EIS installation checklists, this checklist assumes that:

The installer has attended the SL500 Field Service and Frontline Training (ISTK-
1840).
The installer has access to Sun Technical Documentation at: http://download-
adc.oracle.com/archive/cd_ns/E21115_01/
https://support.us.oracle.com/handbook_internal/STK/STK_index.html
That the SL500 Installation Manual is available and referred to during the
installation.

Appendix A
Installing or upgrading firmware for the SL500 is a multi-step process, (which is both disruptive and
non-disruptive) and requires additional software called .putty. and .pscp. versions 0.55 or higher.
These programs are available at:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
Note: The following procedure uses the Ethernet connection to the library.
You can also load code using the command line interface, but it takes 50 minutes or more to
complete.

Step 1: Non-Disruptive
Getting the Files
1. Make a new folder on your local workstation or laptop and name it SL500 Code, add a version
level if you want.
2. Place copies of the additional software (putty and pscp) into this folder.
3. Log in to the Uniform Software Repository (USR) to download the new code at:
https://dlrequest-zn-dlapps1.sfbay.sun.com/usr/search
4. Using the web browser, download the file to your local workstation or laptop by clicking on the
file name (such as verde.tgz).
Do not unzip the file.
Important:
You must obtain a new activation password even if previously configured.
Transferring the Files
1. Make sure you can communicate with the library over Ethernet:
Open a Command Prompt: Start Run CMD
Ping the library, enter: ping <library IP address>
2. 2. In the Command Prompt window
Change directory to the new folder with the 3 files (code, putty, pscp) such as: cd c:\SL500
Code\1.07
Enter:
pscp scp code-name.tgz dnld@<library IP address>:
Note: The command must end with a colon (:).
You will see the changing status of the download (percentage complete).

Step 2: Disruptive
1. After the transfer is complete, run the putty application.
In the Command Prompt window, enter: putty <library IP address>
A remote window opens.
2. In the remote window, Log in using the following:
Login: dnld
Password: d0wnl0ad (using zero.s instead of the letter o).
Warning: Do not open the library door, power-off, or interrupt the library while
downloading code. This will permanently damage the RLC card (library controller).
This process takes approximately 3 to 5 minutes. The remote window closes (Connection
closed by remote host.) upon completion.
3. Messages appear on the screen such as:
File download / Install Utility
Do you want to install this image?
Respond: yes
Extracting files . . .
Installing files . . .
4. Power-off the library, wait 15 seconds, then power-on the library. You can do this while still
connected to the library.
5. After the power-on reset and the library initializes, start putty.
In the Command Prompt window, enter: putty
6. Complete the PuTTY configuration screen.
Enter the library IP address or name in the Host Name and Saved Sessions windows.
7. Click Never, then click Open.
8. In the new Command Prompt window, enter:
Login: service
Password (Activation): <new activation password>
A message indicates your password has expired, enter new password.
Enter a new password for service. This is the account password for the service

you always check the web pages for the latest version.
