Unit Title: Solving Systems of Equations Name: Elizabeth Sreng

Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level: 10th -11th grade
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA-REI.A.1 Explain each step in solving a simple equation as following from the equality of numbers asserted at the previous step, starting from the
assumption that the original equation has a solution. Construct a viable argument to justify a solution method.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.REI.B.3 Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.REI.C.5 Prove that, given a system of two equations in two variables, replacing one equation by the sum of that equation and a multiple of the
other produces a system with the same solutions.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.REI.C.6 Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students build on prior knowledge of solving simple equations to solving systems of equations. They should be able to understand solving equations as a process of
reasoning and explain the reasoning.
How will learning how to solve systems of equations benefit the students in their futures?
What kinds of things will they be able to accomplish with this knowledge?
How will this knowledge help them in the real world?
Will they truly understand what they are learning?
How can we solve a system of equations?
Unit Summary:
In this unit, students will learn how to build on their prior knowledge of solving simple systems of equations to solving systems of equations. They will be able to solve
systems of equations using all three methods: substitution, elimination, and graphing. Students will be able to use their knowledge to write their own word problem and to
decipher the method that they enjoy using the most. They will also understand how they will be able to use this knowledge of solving systems of equations in their futures
and in the real world.

Assessment Plan:

quizzes and unit test.
Group Quizzes will allow students and teacher to
see what they know and what to focus more on for
the unit test.

systems of equations in to solve systems of equations equations on their own. They will be prompted to go onto the Khan Academy website where they will have to
multiple ways (with graphs, graphically. read information and fill in the blanks on their handout. Then, they will solve some problems and copy their
etc.). answers onto their handout. The scavenger hunt will also prompt them to play an interactive game on the Quia
website. Next, they will have to use their critical thinking skills to answer some questions. Finally, they will have
to use what they have learned and graph systems of equations on Desmos.

Lesson 3 (Graphic Organizer)

Students will be able to solve Students will create a concept On a computer/laptop, students will be creating a free account on Popplet in order to create a concept map on
systems of equations with all map using Popplet and the three methods used to solve systems of equations. Their maps will be very detailed and include images,
