Lets Play Drums Activity 4th Grade

Objectives
Students will perform the text and clapping in Lets Play Drums with rhythmic
accuracy
Students will improvise for 16 beats in duple meter through body percussion and
movement of their choice
Students will improvise for 16 beats in duple meter through instruments
Student will perform their improvisation using (at least) two forms of body percussion

Standards being Addressed:


MU:Cr1.1.4b Generate musical ideas (such as rhythms, melodies, and simple
accompaniment patterns) within related tonalities (such as major and minor) and
meters.
MU:Pr5.1.4a Apply teacher-provided and collaboratively developed criteria and
feedback to evaluate accuracy and expressiveness of ensemble and personal
performances.

Materials of Instruction:
Text:
o Lets play drums!
Congas, Tubanos and hand drums 3x
Funky, Rockin, Jammin, Rhythms!
Tambourines, Congas, Tubanos (if time permits)

Lesson Sequence:
Entry Activity/Transition: Previous activities from the class, this will be an activity to end class
with.

Activity #1: Students will perform the text in Lets Play Drums with rhythmic accuracy
1. After Ss finishes with their previous activity T walks up in the front
2. T: Now I need everyone to be completely quiet before we can start!
3. T waits
4. T:Now think, dont talk or move, THINK of a person you would like to have as a partner
with
5. T gives Ss a econd to think
6. T: Now dont talk or move but LOOK at that person
7. Ss look at their partner
8. T: Now you have 3 seconds to sit next to that person
9. Ss sits next to their partner
10. T assists any Ss that doesnt have a partner
11. T instructs Ss to get into two lines with partners facing each other
12. T asks for a student to be her partner to help show the class how to do something
13. T: Repeat after me, Congas, Tubanos and Handdrums
14. Ss echos
15. T: Congas, Tubanos and Handdrums (3x)
16. Ss echos
17. T: Congas, Tubanos and Handdrums (3x with words being clapped)
18. T: Now after we say Congas, Tubanos and Handdrums three times we will do this: Funky,
Rockin, Jammin rhythms!
19. T shows Ss again
20. Ss echos
21. Repeat any steps if necessary/provide feedback when needed
22. T:Now when we start we will say Lets play drums and take three steps towards our
partners
23. T shows Ss
24. Ss echos
25. T: Now what will we say?
26. Ss responds
27. T and Ss run through text/clapping
28. T provides feedback or repeat any necessary steps

Transition:

Activity #2: Students will improvise for 16 beats in duple meter through body percussion and
movement of their choice, Student will perform their improvisation using (at least) two forms
of body percussion
1. T: Now Im going to have my partner do the part we just learn while I jam out, and once
Im done well switch!
2. T and student complete the task
3. T: Now when we jam out, we have to use at least two body percussions. Heres are a few
body percussions you can use!
4. T shows Ss different body percussions
5. T: Now me and my partner are going to show you how this will go!
6. T and partner go through the sequence
7. T: Now you will try it with your partner. First this line will go, then this side will jam out
8. Ss complete the task
9. T: Now lets switch!
10. Ss complete task
11. T: Lets put it all together, this side starts and this side jams out. Then well switch!
12. Ss complete task
13. Repeat any steps if necessary

Transition: Since we can improvise using body percussion and movement, now were going to
add instruments!

Activity #3: Students will improvise for 16 beats in duple meter through instruments
1. T distribute instruments (small instruments laid on the ground, larger instruments a foot
away from Ss)
2. T discusses instrument expectations to Ss
3. T: Now watch how I improvise when I use a drum.
4. T improvises with partner showing Ss proper ways to play a drum
5. T provides instrucations/sequence
6. Ss performs

Summative Assessment: The final assessment of this activity will occur in the final performance
of activity #2 and #3. I will observe while students perform and I will look for their two body
percussions. Additionally I will also look for them clapping and saying the text. Once they can
complete this the final assessment will occur in the last moments of class where Ss will be
assessed based of the created assessment rubrics.
