SECTION C: READING COMPREHENSION (5/20 points)

Part 1: Read the following passage and choose the best answer
How trees are killing our rivers
In the past decade, acid rain has caused a drop in water quality in almost 60 miles of Welsh rivers
A much greater length of small tributary streams has been equally degraded. Most of the streams flow
through plantations of conifer trees.
Now, it seems many of the same streams are facing another problem. The shading effect of the
dark, densely planted conifer crops is altering water temperatures, causing considerable decline in the
development of many aquatic invertebrates and fish.
Anything that affects stream invertebrates and fish has a knock-on effect for other groups of
animal such as otters and characteristics birds of upland waters dippers, grey wagtails and common
sandpipers, in particular.
An assessment of the impact of conifer plantations, which now cover a quarter of the hill and
uplands of Wales, on stream water temperatures has been made by Neil Weatherley and Stephen
Ormerod, of the university of Wales College, Cardiff.
They studied year-round temperature variations in six streams, all of which run into the River
Tywi in central Wales. Three of the rivers drained open moorland; the other three drained large
plantations of 30-year-old Sitka spruce, the most commonly planted conifer in these hills. Two of the
spruce plantations had their trees cut down in a band 45 feet wide either side of the stream so that their
shading effect on the water was at least slightly reduced. In the other plantation draining streams, the
conifer-forested streams, the conifers grew right to its banks. All the conifer-forested streams, like many
of other counterparts in the Welsh hills, were without fish and supported only a few varieties of aquatic
invertebrates. Acidification - made worse by conifer plantations whose needle-shaped leaves effectively
filter pollutants out of the air is the likely cause. Most of the streams formerly supported good populations of
brown trout and Atlantic salmon.
Doctors Weartherley and Ormerod found that average daily water temperatures between April
and August were between 0.6oC and 28oC higher in moorland streams compared with the totally forested.
In the winter, the pattern was reversed. Then the forested stream water was up to 0.9 oC warmer. Water
temperatures in the stream in the conifer plantations with trees growing well back from the banks were
between those of the open moorland streams and the stream which was completely forested. Their water
became up to 1oC between May and June compared with the forested stream.
Temperature differences were mainly the result of trees shade out both direct and indirect light.
Because their trees are closely spaced, conifer plantations are highly effective at blocking light while
small streams are much more susceptible to shading effect than larger rivers.
Based on the substantial change in water temperature caused by planting of conifers, doctors
Weatherley and Ormerod have published biological models developed from laboratory studies to
simulate the impact on invertebrate and fish development.
According to these simulations, the eggs of mayfly species developed faster in a moorland stream
than in a forested stream. Eggs of the common mayfly, for instance, hatched about 19 days earlier in
moorland stream after having been fertilized in the spring. This, combined with predicted faster growth

4
of the hatched nymphs, merely adults would emerge during November in a forested stream before the
end of October in moorland stream.
Similar effects to those forecasts for mayflies were predicted brown trout by the models. The
eggs took up to nine days longer hatch in forested stream. Subsequent fish growth fast in the moorland
stream; a little under a year from egg fertilization the previous November, moorland stream trout were
predicted to between 22 percent and 39 percent heavier than fish in forested streams
By the end of growing season the effect still held, even though weight loss over winter water was
less in the forested stream (because its winter water temperature was slightly higher) smaller fish are
unlikely to be fertile. Trout streams where the conifers had been felled from the banks did virtually as
well as those in moorland streams.
Doctors Weatherley and Ormerod are quick to point out the possible pitfalls of this sort of
biological modeling. Numerous assumptions had to be made along the way. For instance, water
temperature was measured using thermistor probes in the water flow. This works well for organisms with
life stages in the surface water. On the stream bed and among the bed gravels, however, temperatures
vary less than at the stream surface. Deeper down in the gravels and mud, temperatures can be more
stable still even more different from those near the surface.
It was also assumed that no other environmental variable apart from temperature was limiting
organism development.
The modeling suggests that temperature changes brought about by putting dense conifer
plantations close to streams may have important consequences for stream life, similar to moving the
stream to a colder climate, either by shifting it north or its altitude upwards.
71. How have Welsh streams been affected by flowing through conifer plantations?
A. They carry a smaller volume of water than formerly. B. The water temperature is different.
C. The fish are smaller. D. There are no birds living around them.
72. How many densely-shaded streams did Weatherley and Ormerod study?
A. six B. three C. two D. one
73. What did they discover about temperature variation in streams?
A. There is less variation in the most densely-shaded streams. B. The amount of shade has little impact.
C. Streams in open land are cooler in summer. D. Shade only affects streams in summer.
74. How did Weatherley and Ormerod predict the effect of conifer plantations on animal life in streams?
A. They combined published information and their own results.
B. They observed a variety of living creatures in streams.
C. They made mathematical calculations based on laboratory observations.
D. They carried out a new type of laboratory experiment.
75. What did they discover about fish in densely-shaded streams?
A. They were infertile. B. They differed from those in moorland streams.
C. They maintained their weight better in winter. D. They grew faster.
76. What did Weatherley and Ormerod conclude about streams from their study?
A. Temperature alone affects the development of living.
B. Deep streams have more variety of living creatures.
C. Dense shading has a similar effect to climatic changes.
D. Altitude has less effect than vegetation.

HOT TIPS FOR STAYING COOL AT EXAM TIME

92. ____________
Its always good to know what youre aiming for, so that you know if and when you get there. By having
an aim for each week, or even each day, it will help you check your progress and show you if you need
to change your plans.
93. ___________

6
Rather than have to work through masses of notes very time you revise something, try noting down
things you want to remember on a piece of paper. It doesnt seem as much to learn that way, but it makes
sure you dont miss out anything important. Once youve learnt the main points, rewrite them on another
piece of paper without looking at your notes.
94. _____________
If you dont know it by now, youll never learn it for tomorrow. Everyone says it, but its probably
true. Dont stay up all night studying. Youd be better going to bed at a reasonable time, so that you can
wake up fresh and alert on exam day.
95. _____________
There is nothing worse than being disorganized. If you have a plan and stick to it, you wont end up
cramming all your revision into the last few hours! Make a list of your exams and what you need to
learn beforehand, and then draw up a timetable covering all the topics. You can then work out what you
need to do on a weekly basis and when you are going to do it.
96. _____________
When you reach each of your targets, give yourself a treat you deserve it! It could be a drink, a short
break to watch your favorite TV programme, a phone call to a friend- anything you enjoy. Test yourself,
from time to time, on a topic and if you do well, give yourself a special treat based on how well you have
done.
97. ______________
By now youll probably have discovered the method of revision which suits you best. But every now and
then it might be helpful to try a different method. You could try working with a group of friends, or using
a different book which covers things from a new angle. Whatever it is, just try something different
occasionally.
98. ______________
Some things are almost impossible to remember, so you may need to do something unusual to help you
remember. Try writing them down in large letters and bright colors and sticking them on the fridge, on a
mirror or on the bathroom door. Try recording them onto a cassette and keep playing it back to yourself-
on a personal stereo if you have got one!
99. ______________
Not too many people like exams and most of us get nervous. But if youve followed your plan and put
the effort into revising, then there is no need to worry or panic. Hopefully these tips will have helped
you. Give it your best shot- thats all that anyone can expect of you.

Nevertheless, (105)____________ every success story, there must be dozens of artists (perhaps some
potential greats) who have endured a lifetime (106) ____________ hardship in obscurity. Whether they
were never recognised because their work was (107) ____________ of sympathy with the prevailing
fashion, or (108) ____________ they lacked talent, is impossible to say. Most people see art (109)
