With this, a positive mental attitude was observed. They able overcome their

M.A., said, when I play, its like Im in my own world. I dont think about my

problems or anything, Im just so focused in the game, practice scrimmages, etc.

Another, BrianMAC Sports Coachacclaimed that being involved with the success

can also significantly bolster confidence especially if you believe that the

performer you are involved with (e.g. a team-mate) closely matches your own

abilities.

On the other hand, the respondents assessed that they take on with more

energy and determination during the game as the lowest in rank still very

effective. As mentioned in The Runners World Big Book of Marathon and Half-

Marathon Training, as you run more.youll develop better running economy, so

you can sustain the same pace with less energy. This simply mean that an

athlete able to use less energy during the competition through this he or she

have a reserve energy to go on during the competition. Courtney Carroll,

M.A.Sports Psychology mentioned that being able to channel energy into playing

sports can help your child cope with obstacles. Lastly, Burtin, D., Raedeke, T.

(January 17, 2008) author of Sports Psychology for Coaches added that they are

aware of their ideal energy zone and are able to get into that zone and stay

there.

my effective decision-making in deliberate practice and replication of a

competitive setting during training and I can be able to identify what option is

available and how to create the outcome that I am looking for yielded weighted

means of 4.13 and 4.09, and ranks 4 and 5, respectively. Both were adjectively

rated as effective.

The composite mean was 4.23 which safely imply that the

SangguniangKabataan Sports Development Program is very effective to the

character development (decision making) of youth in selected Barangays in Lipa

City.

With a series of exposures in trainings and competitions, the respondents

valued it as the most beneficial in the development of their decision-making. The

span of time the respondents have through in training and competition enables

them to be a better decision maker. , Bo Hanson, a four-time Olympian,

Coaching Consultant and Director of Athlete Assessments says that excellent

decision-makers, instead of letting things happen they take control and make

things happen. Obviously, the key in developing any critical skill like decision

making is to practice. Excellent decision making is the result of years of

practicing in the training environment. The training environment should actually

encourage athletes to weigh their options, make decisions and make mistakes he
LIPA CITY COLLEGES

added. Further, he mentioned that an athlete needs to learn and practice making

the right decision on their own. If a coach provides training environment where

athlete can learn to make their decisions, and not rely solely on their coach, they

will much better prepared come competition time.

Otherwise, respondents attest that in decision-making, to identify what

option is available and how to create the decision during actual competition as

the least but still an effective means of developing this character (decision-

making).Burtin, D., Raedeke, T. (January 17, 2008) author of Sports Psychology

for Coaches acclaimedthat sports helps an athlete remain true to their values

while handling the hundreds of choices they must make as an athlete. Each time

they confronted with a difficult choice their decisionphilosophy make their

decisions quicker and easier because their decision s was consistent with their

principles. Thus, an athlete can make systematic decisions that were based on

facts and sound reasoning than knee-jerk reactions. It will be ready when they

need it ready to help them make split-second decisions that they can live with

and feel good about it.

ranks of 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The least was on It teaches sportsmanship and

how to control emotions which got a weighted mean of 4.31 and a rank of 5.

The composite mean was 4.42 which safely implies that the

SangguniangKabataan Sports Development Program is also very effective to the

character development (discipline) of youth in selected Barangays in Lipa City.

The respondents attest that one way in which their discipline was

developed was through their coach who imposed rules in which they have to

follow. Continues involvement and exposure in sports hone their discipline in the

most effective way. It is essential to coach with discipline. Discipline lays the

foundation for the rate of development a team experiences, as well as the pride

both coach and athletes feel for their team. Most importantly, coaches who use

discipline deliberately and effectively have the opportunity to positively influence

athletes behaviour in all other areas of their lives. Commenting further, The

Borneo Post said that through involvement in sports students would develop

good discipline which would help them stay away from social problems like drug

taking, illegal racing and loitering which were common among todays

youngsters.

To continue, John Woodwen (UCLA Coach) said that, in sports, the

discipline to do the right thing in the right way every day builds the habits that we

need to win on the practice field so that theyll be available to us automatically in

the game.
LIPA CITY COLLEGES

Hence, the respondents testify that it teaches sportsmanship and how to

control emotions as the least effective means of developing their discipline. In

contrast, some of the athletes tend to be aggressive also because of their

opponents attitude and behaviour during the play. However, Cathi Cohen, LCSW

acclaimed,a child is learning new skills, making friends, and developing resiliency

while playing. You can help him develop good sportsmanship by remembering

that playing games is all about having fun.

Personal differences are set aside for the common good of the team which

made a weighted mean of 4.28 and a rank of 2. The three remaining indicators

such as Sports can decrease the sense of isolation felt by some children with a

physical or cultural differences or a disability, I can freely accept the criticisms

of others and I learn to express gratitude which turns away my pride got equal

weighted means of 4.23 and equal ranks of 4.

The composite mean of 4.27 safely concludes that the

SangguniangKabataan Sports Development Program is very effective to the

character development (communication) of youth in selected Barangays in Lipa

City.

Based on the data gathered from the respondents, they assessed that

they feel a strong connection much like brothers to their team mates. Their

regular interactions during trainings and competitions enable them to treat one

another as their real brother or sister. Beauchamp, Maclachlan and Lothian

argue that maintaining positive patterns of communication enhances cohesion in

sports team enables players to adapt and connect with other team members.

While, they assessed similarly that sports can decrease the sense of

isolation, they can freely accept the criticisms and learn to express gratitude.
LIPA CITY COLLEGES

Instances arise in which they cant easily accept what their team mates or

coaches were commenting on him or her. Time still comes that an athlete felt that

he or she was out of the group because their cultural and behavioral differences

were obviously observed. Hence, according to Livestrong articles, sports

program fosters a sense of belongingness. Sports participation is one way that

children define their sense of identity. Further, Burtin, D., Raedeke, T. (January

17, 2008) author of Sports Psychology for Coaches says that players feel they fit

in and are accepted by others on the team. They added that athletes can express

their views and feelings openly and directly.

As provided in the table, all the indicators were also assessed by the

respondents from selected Barangays of Lipa City as very effective. The

indicator I appreciate the importance of teamwork and work ethics got the

highest weighted mean of 4.63 and the highest rank of 1 followed by I learn to

positive outcomes with a weighted mean of 4.29.

The composite mean was 4.44 with an adjective rating of very effective.

Here the respondents attest that sports program was also a mean in which

they appreciate the importance of team work and work ethics. Jason Sandler

mentioned that the strength of the team is each individual member... the strength

of each member is the team. It is important to work together to achieve a

common goal of winning the match,. He continued that, when a team is united in

their pursuit of a common goal or ambition they have good task cohesion. Thus,

you can't be on a winning team unless that group of athletes has learned how to

get along and play together.

LIPA CITY COLLEGES

On the other perspective, the respondents perceived as the least was that

they become dependable as a teammate and rely to them (team mates). Jason

Sandler said that in team sports, the players need to depend on each other. You

have to surrender your need for individual glory for the good of the team. You

have to get into we, not me.The Power of Teamwork (July, 1999) mentioned,

when you support your teammates are direct and honest with them, readily

accept your role on the team even if it means that you don't get as much playing

time as someone else, then you're making a significant contribution to a winning

effort.

the respondents as very effective. Ranked 1st was on Teach prospective

leaders how to gain respect and develop leadership skills with my peer group

with a weighted mean of 4.43. These were followed by Provide the skills and

support to effectively troubleshoot the challenges we face in the team, Sports

programs serve as a springboard of learning, operating and negotiating from

opposition of ethical strength and As a situation occurs, I become aspired from

team with a weighted mean of 4.19, rank of 5 and the only indicator adjectively

rated as effective.

The composite mean was 4.32 with an adjective rating of very effective.

One aspect of interpersonal development in sports development program

which was being left behind was the leadership skills. Most people failed to

observe it. And there were some who got emphasized on its aid to leadership

development. Leadership requires an understanding or respect for the power

dynamic between the influencer and the follower.

LIPA CITY COLLEGES
49
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

In addition, players who occupied more central positions, and thus

performed more dependent and coordinative tasks that necessitated interaction

with others, were more likely to develop essential leadership skills. While a task

orientated or person orientated leaders are also different and

gain respect in different ways. A task orientated

leaders are those who have good activity related skills/knowledge.

They are those who can lead the team due to `their understanding of

the task and they lead because of this knowledge or experience.

On the other hand, this sports program is often bring barriers between the

leader and the member. Hence, The importance of leadership in sports (October

2010) said that this encourages an athlete to apply their leadership skills.

However, athletes get afraid to speak up when players or teams have issues that

can disrupt team cohesiveness.

This simply implies that the respondents from the selected barangay have

an anonymous perception in the character development through sports program.

They claimed that their perceptions regarding to the effect of this program has no

significant differences. This simply means that the perceptions of the

respondents were similar. They all perceived that sports development program

has a great implication towards intrapersonal character specifically in terms of

self-confidence, decision-making and discipline. As mentioned by Daniel F.

Perkins, Associate Professor of Family and Youth said that for youth,

participating in sports may develop self-confidence, self-disciplinealso teach

youth about sportsmanlike behaviors. Therefore,Burtin, D., Raedeke, T. (January

On the other hand, the computed F-values of 0.33 for communication and

0.80 for teamwork did not met the critical F-values at 0.05 level of significance

with 3/16 degrees of freedoms, thus accepting the null hypothesis.

These safely mean that the perceptions of the respondents on the effects

of SangguniangKabataan Sports Development Program to the character

development of youth in selected Barangays in Lipa City have significant

difference in terms of leadership and no significant differences in terms

communication and teamwork.

Based on the aggregated data, the respondents impart that they have a

similar perception both in communication and teamwork. In addition,

interpersonal development occurs as children are forced to interact with others,

particularly through team sports such as football or volleyball. Further, Evans &

Roberts, (1987); James,(1995); Manjone, (1998); Elley& Kirk, (2002); Wright

&Cote, (2003) indicated in their research that sport experiences foster social

success, positive peer relationships, and leadership skills. Moreover, sports can

be fun and engaging way for youth to learn some important lessons about life.
LIPA CITY COLLEGES

Studies suggest that participation in sports can be very beneficial fostering

responsible social behaviors and an application of personal health and fitness.

Daniel F. Perkins, Associate Professor of Family and Youth supported that

participating on a team also can give children or youth an important sense of

belonging, acclaimed. Sports are opportunities for children and youth to learn;

they provide young a practice field for life.learning to work as a team teaches

young children social skills that will help them in their growth as people he added.

However, the respondents have different perception regarding the

implication of the sports program towards leadership. Team allows them to learn

social skills and gives you an opportunity to be a leader. Also, this program

provides leadership opportunities.Sports also allow children the opportunity to

develop their leadership skills through peers. Thus, Burtin, D., Raedeke, T.

(January2008) author of Sports Psychology for Coachesbelieved deeply in the

value of the sports often claim that it can help teach young people how to

intrapersonal have high significant relationship when grouped according to the

sports program and significant relationships when grouped according to facilities

and budget.

Generally, the respondents attest that there is a difference on their

perception regarding to the relationship of sports program and character

development (intrapersonal). However, Keri A. Schwab, Mary Sara Wells, & Skye

Arthur-Banning (April 2010) acclaimed that children choose to participate in

activities in which they believe they are reasonably competent. This may

increase their motivation because research indicates that those who are naturally

talented may want to further demonstrate their skills, or even show off their

superior abilities.Jay Coakley and Anita White continued that young people were

most likelyto participate in a sport activity when it was seen as avenue for

displaying or extending their competence. Thus, Martin,S.L., Martin, M.,White,

development differently The more activities youth involved in, the higher their
