working space:

Develop laboratory-specific safe work procedures that address the use, handling, storage, disposal of
hydrogen sulfide. Include emergency response actions to be undertaken and by whom in the event of an
accidental release or exposure.

PPE:

Hydrogen sulfide detectors are required in all areas that use hydrogen sulfide. All workers performing
experiments involving hydrogen sulfide gas must have on them personal detectors when working with
hydrogen sulfide. The detectors must be maintained and calibrated on a regularly scheduled basis as per
the manufacturers recommendations.

Hydrogen sulphide can react with rust or corrosion deposits on

equipment to form iron sulphide. This reaction occurs in an oxygen

free atmosphere where hydrogen sulphide gas is present or where the

concentration of hydrogen sulphide is greater than that of oxygen.

This happens most often in closed vessels, tanks or pipelines. Iron

sulphide is a pyrophoric material, which means that it can ignite

spontaneously when it is exposed to air.
