Thedifferencebetweenthetotalandeffectivestressesissimplytheporewaterpressureu.Consequently,thetotal
andeffectivestressMohrcircleshavethesamediameterandareonlyseparatedalongtheaxisbythemagnitude
oftheporewaterpressure.
ItiseasytoconstructaseriesoftotalstressMohrCirclesbuttheinferredtotalstressparametershavenorelevanceto
actualsoilbehaviour.Inprinciple,theeffectivestrengthparametersarenecessarytocheckthestabilityagainstfailure
foranysoilconstructioninthefield.Todothis,theporewaterpressureinthegroundunderthechangedloading
conditionsmustbeknownandingeneraltheyarenot.
Inanundrainedtriaxialtestwithporepressuremeasurement,thisispossibleandtheeffectivestressescanthenbe
determined.Alternatively,indrainedtests,theloadingratecanbemadesufficientlyslowsoastoallowthedissipation
ofallexcessporewaterpressure.Forlowpermeabilitysoils,thedrainagewillrequirelongertimes.
Inundrainedtests,thegeneralexpressionrelatingtotalporewaterpressuredevelopedandchangesinapplied
stressesforboththestagesis:
u=u1+u2=B.3+B.A.(13)=B[3+A(13)]
whereu1=porewaterpressuredevelopedinthefirststageduringapplicationofconfiningstress3,
u2=porewaterpressuredevelopedinthesecondstageduringapplicationofdeviatorstress,and
BandAareSkempton'sporewaterpressureparameters.
ParameterBisafunctionofthedegreeofsaturationofthesoil(=1forsaturatedsoils,and=0fordrysoils).
ParameterAisalsonotconstant,anditvarieswiththeoverconsolidatonratioofthesoilandalsowiththemagnitude
ofdeviatorstress.ThevalueofAatfailureisnecessaryinplottingtheeffectivestressMohrcircles.
Considerthebehaviourofsaturatedsoilsamplesinundrainedtriaxialtests.Inthefirststage,increasingthecell
pressurewithoutallowingdrainagehastheeffectofincreasingtheporewaterpressurebythesameamount.
Thus,thereisnochangeintheeffectivestress.Duringthesecondshearingstage,thechangeinporewaterpressure
canbeeitherpositiveornegative.
ForUUtestsonsaturatedsoils,porewaterpressureisnotdissipatedinboththestages(i.e.,u=u1+u2).
ForCUtestsonsaturatedsoils,porewaterpressureisnotdissipatedinthesecondstageonly(i.e.,u=u2).
