Speed Sensor - Test

SMCS - 4803-081

Using Messenger
1. Start the machine.

2. Locate the readings for the speed of the motor with the Messenger display. The readings for the
speed of the motor are listed under "System Parameters / AWD".

3. Set engine speed to high idle.

4. Activate "CREEP" mode. Leave the "FNR" switch in the NEUTRAL position. With the command
for wheel speed at zero, verify that both front wheels are not spinning. Verify that both speed
sensors read zero.

5. Select the forward direction. Select maximum "CREEP" speed. Ensure that the steering and the
articulation are straight ahead. Both front wheels should spin in the forward direction. The motor
speeds should be positive. The speeds for the motors should be approximately 920 50 RPM.

6. Select the reverse direction. Maintain maximum "CREEP" speed. Ensure that the steering and the
articulation are straight ahead. Both front wheels should spin in the reverse direction. The motor
speeds should be negative. The speeds for the motors should be approximately 920 50 RPM.

7. Disengage "CREEP" mode. Shut down the machine.

Using Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET)

Note: The command for the pump can only be overridden if the AWD clutches are disabled.
Disabling the AWD clutches allows no machine movement with the overrides. When the front
axle is elevated above the ground, there may be sufficient drag in the clutches that may cause the
front wheels to spin during overrides and during calibration. Ensure that the front axle is set firmly
on the ground when this test is performed.

approximately 615 20 RPM. the values should be negative with a reverse command.

Diagnostics
The right speed increases when the command for the left pump is changed.

1. Check the wiring harness connections that connect to the following:

{ the wheel speed sensors

{ the pump control solenoids

{ the hydraulic line that is routed between the pump and the motors

2. One or more of these items may be reversed.

The speed displayed positive values for both the forward and the reverse direction.

1. Check the following items:

{ The speed sensor

{ The harness for the speed sensor

2. The speed sensor could have failed. There could be an open circuit in either one of the two signal
wires.

The speed displayed positive values for the reverse direction and negative values for
the forward direction.

1. Check the following items:

{ The hydraulic lines that are routed between the pumps and the motors

{ Electrical connections at the solenoids for the pumps

{ Electrical connections at the speed sensors
