AGENTS OF SOCIALIZATION

FAMILY
-basic unit of society
-young children develop their sense of self mostly from their interaction with their
siblings and parents
-a harmonious and healthy fostered during the early life determines he quality of
personal relationships the child will establish during the early with others.
- It is the home that parents institute certain expectations for proper behavior, attitude
and activities assigned to either male or female

SCHOOL
-considered as the playing fields, where children compete for grades and evaluation
given by teachers
-breeding ground of values that would reinforce what the home has planted

PEER GROUP
-members of social groups that have similar interest, social positions, or common age
range

MASS MEDIA
-radio, movies, television and internet
-sources of social learning used to observe and imitate behaviors

WORK PLACE
-people who have the passion for work and posses the necessary qualifications will
consider it as a form of socialization that provides them the chance to perform their
duties and fulfil their roles in the society

PROCESS OF SOCIALIZATION
Primary Socialization- initial process of socialization experienced by the individual
that makes him a member of a society

Secondary Socialization- usually subsequent process that introduces the first


interaction that the socialization process is established.

Developmental Socialization- process of learning a behaviour developing appropriate


values and social skill that are in accordance to the individuals developmental roles
considered as a member of the society

Spontaneous Socialization- unplanned socialization process where in the individual


learns the behaviour as influenced by someone who has just newly introduced it.
Anticipatory Socialization- when a person adopts the values, behaviour or viewpoints
of a group which he or she would like to belong, the person “rehearses” or prepares
himself for future roles or profession he would eventually embrace
Resocialization-process which necessitates major modifications or reconstruction for
a group or organization to discard former patterns of bahevior and to accept new ones
as part of the transition in one’s life
SOCIAL STRUCTURE
-way in which a society is organized according to its pattern of relationships

ELEMENTS OF SOCIAL STRUCTURE


A. Statuses –refers to the full range of socially defined positions within a larger group
of society-from lowest to the highest position

Ascribed status-assinged to a perso WITHOUT regard for the person’s unique talents
or characteristics.

Achieved status- acquired voluntarily or through one’s own effort and personal
abilities

B. SOCIAL ROLE
-set of behaviour expected of people who occupy a given social position or status

ROLE –enables members to anticipate the behaviour of others and pattern their own
actions accordingly.

ROLE CONFLICT- occurs when there is are incompatible expectations that arise
from two or more social positions held by the same person

ROLE STRAIN- a tension between and among the roles connected to a SINGLE
status

C. GROUPS- refers to any number of people with similar norms, values and
expectations who regularly and consciously interacts

D. SOCIAL NETWORK AND TECHNOLOGY


- They are kind of social relationship that link a person directly to others and
indirectly to a larger group
