Foreword

Foreword

Congratulations! And thank you for selecting the VIBROCORD FFT

data collector to record and analyze your machine signals.
This instrument is designed to support the two-level strategy for
reliable, cost-effective machine condition monitoring:
Trend monitoring (Level 1) allows you to keep an eye on the most
important indicators of machine operating condition, such as vibra-
tion severity, shock pulse emission by anti-friction bearings, tempera-
ture and pump cavitation, with a minimum of effort. Only when
conditions deteriorate to critical levels is further attention required:
Signal analysis (Level 2) lets you pinpoint the cause of incipient
damage and plan its remedy well before breakdown has a chance to
disrupt production.
VIBROCORD is the latest addition to the PRFTECHNIK AG line of
progressive maintenance tools such as VIBROTIP/VIBCODE, VI-
BROSPECT FFT and VIBRONET. It gives you all the features you
demand of a state-of-the-art condition monitoring instrument:
- Powerful, yet easy to use: measures, analyzes, collects data - no
experience necessary - yet allows detailed measurement parameter
adjustment for advanced setup:
over 40 optimizable measurement setups
Each setup includes
- Tolerance limits: alarm/warning thresholds stored for many
different types of machines
- Frequency files: machine- and bearing-characteristic damage
frequencies can be displayed in the spectrum.
- Event list: machine-characteristic events complement the mea-
surement data
- Intelligent routing:
'Route Expert': automatic recording of frequency spectra and
additional characteristic values - even at additional locations -
when tolerance limits are exceeded.
Automatic collection of different types of readings at the same
location with the same transducer.
- VIBCODE
Total trending reliability thanks to automatic measurement
location recognition with the patented VIBCODE probe.
VIBCODE Pool measurement points: preset configuration of
desired measurements for every location, with no need for
routes.
Automatic measurement locations recognition also for non-
coded measurement locations.
VIBROCORD 01.01

- Interchangeable, PC-compatible memory cards (available with 4

MB capacity).
- Extensive range of PRFTECHNIK transducers
- Simple operation thanks to graphically-oriented operating ele-
ments, user guidance in display
1-3
Foreword

- Preset limits for vibration velocity and displacement according to
ISO 10816-3 as well as for shock pulse measurement.
- Spectrum: RMS value is calculated over the displayed range
(zoom).
- Alarm trigger in route: Exceeding the limit triggers an adaptive
measurement for diagnosis (Route Expert).
New features in version 1.37 & 1.40:
- Route: The selection and display of the measurement tasks in the
route has been improved. Aggregate, measurement point and task
list are now available as new screens.
- Only measurement locations and tasks can be skipped in the route
(no aggregates or machines).
- AutoSave in route: Measurement tasks that use the same transduc-
er at a measurement location can be executed automatically.
- Data recorder: Consecutive measurements of a measurement task
with various options.
- Shock pulse measurement: The entry of the normalization parame-
ter before the measurement has changed.
- New setups for motor current analysis (#58), bearing envelope
(#43, #44), alternating voltage time signal and spectrum (#45,
#46), sound pressure spectrum (#59) and alternating voltage
(#61).
- 2-channel measurement: The transducer of channel A is used as
the default transducer for channel B. The setting of channel B can
subsequently be changed manually.
- 2-channel time signal measurement is only possible with a maxi-
mum of 1600 lines.

Power supply

Power supply
The FFT data collector uses three different types of power supply:

Compact NiCad pack (VIB 5.625) with charger (VIB 5.620)

Standard power supply: the battery pack can be left in place or
removed from the instrument for charging. Charging duration:
max. 6 hours. Operating duration: typically 24 hours in 2-channel
operation (25% active measurement, 25% standby, 50% 'sleep'
mode).
Mains power supply (see Appendix, page 4-3)
Can be connected in situations where cordless operation is not
needed (e.g. when downloading measurement data to an office
PC) in order to save NiCad power.
Alkali-magnesium batteries (6 pieces, page 4-3)
Ordinary 1.5V batteries (IEC LR14, size 'C') may be used for
immediate operation while the NiCad pack is charging.
An auxiliary battery (9V, IEC 6LR61) backs up the main battery pack
whenever its output voltage drops below 6V.

Using the rechargeable NiCad pack (MAIN supply)

The compact rechargeable NiCad pack is located inside the ribbed
portion of the instrument housing and also contains the battery
compartment cover. The charging socket (for the VIB 5.620 charger)
is integrated into the cover.

NiCad removal
1. Switch off the instrument.
2. Loosen the cover fastening screws using the 2.5 mm hex
wrench supplied.
3. Remove the battery pack.
Installation is performed in reverse order.

The charger can be left connected indefinitely with no danger of

battery damage, since it automatically switches to an impulse-type
charge maintenance cycle.
VIBROCORD 01.01

The battery can lose its unused capacity if recharged too often
when only halfway depleted. It should therefore be renewed at
regular intervals (approx. every three months) before it is re-
charged. This renewal cycle takes up to 12 hours to complete.
2-4
Power supply

- Damaged NiCads must be removed from service.

- Rechargeable batteries contain corrosive alkali!
If alkali leaks from a damaged battery onto skin or into the eyes,
WARNING!
rinse immediately with plenty of water and consult a doctor.
- Keep batteries below 60C / 140F.
- Do not open or incinerate batteries.
- Do not short circuit the battery terminals.
- Recharging must occur at temperatures below 40C / 104F.
- Dispose of batteries only at authorized recycling facilities.
Attention!

Auxiliary battery (AUX)

The auxiliary battery activates whenever the main battery pack
voltage drops below 6V and the 'MAIN' LED illuminates.

Auxiliary battery replacement

1. Switch off the instrument.
2. Open the bottom battery compartment:
Loosen screws with 2.5 mm hex key.
3. Pull out black tab and remove auxiliary battery.

main battery nor the auxiliary battery can deliver sufficient supply
voltage ( > 6V ).
Attention!
Do not use NiCad rechargeables as auxiliary batteries.
VIBROCORD 01.01

The system clock and data memory are maintained by a lithium

battery when both main and auxiliary batteries are removed. The
service life of the lithium battery is approximately five years.
INFO
Used batteries should be disposed of properly (see page 1-10)!

Power-saving function ('sleep mode')

If no keys are pressed for a specified duration (known here as
'runtime'), the instrument automatically deactivates its display to
conserve battery power and the 'SLEEP' LED illuminates above the
display. The display reactivates when any key is pressed.
If, however, no keys are pressed during the specified 'sleep' period
(the 'sleeptime' duration), the instrument shuts down completely and
can be 'reawakened' by pressing the ON/OFF key. The CONFIG menu
(page 2-11) allows you to set these 'runtime' and 'sleeptime' intervals.

Battery condition
The charge remaining in the main batteries is shown in the status line
of the main menu. If it drops below 6V, the MAIN LED illuminates.
The charge remaining in the auxiliary batteries is shown by the AUX

Transducer connections

Transducer connections
The VIBROCORD FFT data collector allows connection of two
transducers with analog voltage or current output. The correspond-
ing QLA sockets, marked 'Channel A' and 'Channel B', are located on
the back of the instrument.
The reference transducer is connected to the trigger input using an 8-
pin plug (LEMOSA).

(LEMOSA, digital)

Transducer input
The two analog measurement channels are not galvanically insu-
lated from each other. Therefore, before taking 2-channel mea-
surements on different machines, you should either ground them WARNING!
properly or use electrically insulated transducers.
When unplugging the transducer cables, take care to retract the
bushing on the QLA plugs in order to avoid damage (see above).
Attention!
Trigger input
When plugging in the trigger cable, note the proper plug orienta-
tion indicated by the groove on the socket and the marking on the
plug itself. Never rotate the cable plugs in their sockets as that
could damage the pins of the plug.

VIBROCORD can be used as a data collector, as a multimeter or as a

balancing instrument*. * The Balance operating mode is
described in the VIBROCORD operating
The route mode (P. 3-22) is intended for use with a fixed measure- manual, Balancing and further func-
ment sequence to be collected routinely at regular intervals. tions (VIB 9.637G).
In the multimeter mode, individual measurements can be performed
for detailed signal analysis and status diagnosis. The data recorder in
VIBROCORD is used for continuous measurements.
The optional Balance program module (VIB 5.667) can be used to
remedy a static or dynamic unbalance on the machine.
The patented VIBCODE rapid transducer with automatic measure-
ment location recognition can be used in all of the operating modes.

VIBROCORD provides more than 50 predefined measurement set-

tings (Setups) that take account of almost every measurement task
on machines. These setups are identified by a number and corre-
sponding measurement task and, for a better overview, compiled into
lists according to the type of measurement.
If required, the individual setup parameters can be adapted to the
conditions on site. Changed setups are stored under a new number
(62...99) and with a new name. Further details on the application
and parameters of individual setups are provided on page 4-4ff.

S Charact. overall value: shock pulse / bearing condition

SETUP 6

Display range:
Signal level Display
< - 9 dBsv L
> +80 dBsv H

Shock pulse signal levels are indicated as a combination of 'Carpet

value' (background level, indicative of lubrication condition) and
'Maximum value' (transient peak level, indicative of damage), both
INFO expressed in logarithmic [dB] terms. Bearing condition is deter-
mined by comparing normalized signal levels and their difference
with reference values.
These characteristic overall values are typically affected by various
The procedures used for bearing
diagnosis (shock pulse, envelope curve, external factors (e.g. rolling velocity, i.e. bearing size and rpm,
vibration acceleration) comply with the signal damping, lubrication). To evaluate the condition of the
ISO norm, 10816-1 (Appendix E3 , E1). bearing objectively and to allow comparison between values
measured on different bearings requires either a comparison
measurement in the good condition or a normalization of the
measured values.
Normalization:
This process considers the following individual factors:
- Bearing size, RPM
These bearing-specific factors are combined in the so-called initial
value or the dBi value. The dBi value is calculated from the
rotational speed and the bore diameter of the bearing.

- Signal damping, lubrication, load, ...

These unspecific external influencing factors must be determined
empirically within the framework of a normalization adjustment.
Together with the dBi value, the adjustment value obtained in this
way, or even the dBa value, results in the so-called adjusted initial
value (dBia value).
VIBROCORD 01.01

Consequently, the normalized shock pulse value (dBn) works out

to:

dBn = dBsv + dBi + dBa = dBsv + dBia

3-7
Multimeter operation

Normalization adjustment
Under ideal conditions (dBa=0), the normalized carpet value of a
bearing in good condition equals 5 dBn. The true dBa value equals INFO
the difference from the measured value, only with the initial value
(dBi) normalized carpet value.
Example:
Normalized measurement on a new bearing: 9 dBn.
The adjustment value is therefore:
9 dBn - 5 dBn = 4 dBa.

a. Normalized shock pulse measurement with measure-

ment of the RPM
Before measuring the shock pulse signal, first measure the RPM. The
RPM parameter in the measurement setup is set to Measure.

The dBi value is automatically calculated from the diameter and
RPM.
The dBa value enables the dBi value to be subsequently adjusted, Note

For reliable shock pulse measurement, the dBi value should lie
within a range of -20 to +40.
The NO NORM softkey lets you switch back to non-normalized
measurement (dBsv).

the RPM
The shaft RPM can also be entered manually. The RPM parameter

Spectrum (Setup 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 25, 26)

Characteristics/tips:
In all spectra, the measured quantity can be subsequently changed
for post-processing, i.e. after the measurement. For example, the
bearing noise (acceleration) on gears can first be recorded and saved
for diagnosis. Subsequently, the measured quantity in the measure-
ment setup can be set to velocity or displacement (integration) to
evaluate the running condition. As a result, no further measurement
is required.

- Parameter RPM:
RPM-dependent damage frequencies (e.g. harmonics) are dis-
played in the spectrum only when this parameter is set to
'measure' or 'enter'.
- Parameter AVERAGE:
'Peakhold' places emphasis on stochastically occurring spectral
peaks.
'Linear' emphasizes recurrent stationary components.
- Parameter BAND FILTER:

SETUPs

Multispectrum (Setup 28)

Characteristics/tips:
The spectrum is recorded in three frequency ranges of different
resolution, which depends upon the number of spectrum lines (100,
200, 400, 800, 1600 or 3200 lines) and the upper frequency
boundary (10 kHz, 20 kHz or 40 kHz):
- In the low-frequency range (0 - 100/200/400 Hz), the spectrum is
recorded with high resolution. At 0.125 Hz resolution, for exam-
ple, a peak at twice the operating frequency (99.66 Hz for
n = 2990 RPM) resulting from shaft misalignment can be distin-
guished from that due to a 100 Hz magnetic field fault in a motor.
- At medium frequencies (100/200/400 Hz - 1/2/4 kHz), a resolu-
tion of 1.25 Hz is sufficient to display fan blade passing frequen-
cies, for example.
- In the high-frequency (1/2/4 kHz - 10/20/40 kHz) range, a
resolution of only 12.5 Hz, for example, is needed to distinguish
bearing damage frequencies.
You can take a multispectrum reading whenever you are not certain
which frequency range to select for measurement. This setting gives
you a complete overview of all frequency peaks that occur in the
predefined range. As explained above, this give the optimum resolu-
tion in each portion of the frequency spectrum for nearly any
application.

SETUPs

Phase measurement (Setup 48, Setup list X)

The amplitude and phase position of the vibration vector is deter-
mined from the rotational frequency components of the vibration
signal. This monitoring method commonly used in machine diagnosis
is used to detect machine faults. High-speed data recording lets you
identify even rapid damage development such as blade loss, unbal-
ance, thermal stresses,...
Required transducers:
- 2 vibration transducers (for 2-channel measurement)
- 1 RPM transducer as a trigger
Special feature:
In software version 1, phase measurement can only be carried out
with rotational frequency components of the 1st order. This lets you
identify damage development such as unbalance of the machine, a
crack in the shaft or eccentricity.
Software version 2 also lets you carry out phase measurement with
rotational frequency vibration components of a higher order since
order filters can be selected in this version (see the Balance and
Additional Functions Manual, VIB 9.637G).

Process parameters (Setup 20)

Process parameters measured with another instrument can be en-
tered and stored manually.
Example: current measurement
1. Select SETUP 20 ('Manual measurement value entry')
2. Select the transducer 'AMPERE METER'.
3. Press the MEASURE softkey.
4. Enter the measured value via the keyboard.
5. Store the measurement with SAVE (see page 3-5).
Special feature:
You can enter numbers with a maximum of five digits including the
sign and decimal places after the decimal point. Decimal numbers are
rounded to two decimal places after the decimal point.

Temperature (Setup 19)

Characteristic
Temperatures can only be measured in 1-channel operation (channel
A or channel B).
Recommended transducers:
- Hand-held probe (VIB 8.607) for temperatures up to 500C /
932F
VIBROCORD 01.01

- Magnetic temperature probe (VIB 8.608) for temperatures up to

240C / 464F
- Infrared hand-held probe (VIB 6.600) for non-contact tempera-
ture measurements up to 260C / 500F
3-17
SETUPs

Vibration (Setup 1, 2, 7, 11, 12, 16, 17)

Characteristic:
- Parameter DURATION:
The measurement duration setting applies to one parameter. The
measurement of RMS, 0-P and P-P values takes twice as long as
indicated by the DURATION parameter.

Time signal (Setup 10, 21 - 24, 27, 31, 34, 35, 38, 39)
Characteristic
If you change the filter range when envelope analysis is switched
off, the TIME parameter will be automatically adjusted to the new
filter range. This adjustment can also be changed again manually.
Software version 2 lets you filter and display the sinus components
of the RPM harmonics of a higher order (see the Balance and
Additional Functions Manual, VIB 9.637G).
Two-channel time signal measurements can only be performed
with a maximum of 1600 lines.

Dual mode (spectrum and time signal, Setup 29)

The time signal is recorded only in order to check signal stability.
Expansion (ZOOMing) of the time axis is not possible.

Impact test (Setup 40)

This setup is used to determine the intrinsic frequency of machine
components. The velocity spectrum with internal trigger (10% level)
is measured.
Special feature:
No Autorange is performed. If an overflow occurs, the amplifier
setting must be performed manually.

Notes on the measurement:

Before the actual measurement, the amplitude range should be
determined by several trial impacts to determine when overflow
no longer occurs.
The component whose intrinsic frequency is to be determined is
excited in the vibration direction of interest by a hammer blow.
The transducer records the response of the fading component
vibration and is mounted at one or more measurement locations
that provide adequate vibration amplitude.
Only single impacts should be measured. No double impacts
VIBROCORD 01.01

should be measured. The coupling material between the hammer

and component must be selected to be correspondingly elastic or
rigid to excite the component within the range of the anticipated
intrinsic frequency.
3-18
SETUPs

The time range of the signal recording must be adjusted in dual

mode (Setup 29) to the frequency range of the intrinsic frequency
calculated from it. The response signal is triggered above a
recorded response amplitude, e.g. records from 10 % of the
measuring range upwards.
Vibration behavior varies according to the type and clamping of
the component. Consequently, multiple measurements should be
made and averaged within the frequency range. The size, direc-
tion and frequency range of the impact should be as constant as
possible.
The degree of excitation must be optimized according to the
attenuation or fading of the vibration. The component should
freely vibrate in the time range for long enough to allow an
adequate frequency to be determined.
The clamping of the component should correspond as closely as
possible to its operational state.

Motor current analysis (Setup 58)

The fluctuation response of the time signal and of the averaged
frequency spectrum can be assessed at the same time as the current
probe analysis of individual motor phases. This enables the identifica-
tion of electrical faults in AC motors, in DC motors and in frequency
converter-controlled motors as well in the 50/60Hz power supply.
This setup is suitable for transient and fluctuating motor current
signals.
The following current probe with a ferrite core on the cable is
recommended (1mV/A) for motor current analysis:

The transducer parameters in measurement setup 58 are adjusted to

VIBROCORD 01.01

the recommended current probe. An adapter cable for BNC to QLA is

required to connect the current probe to the VIBROCORD measure-
ment channel.
Special feature:
The current time signal is recorded as well as the spectrum (Dual
mode).
3-19
SETUPs

Sound pressure spectrum (Setup 59)

A narrow band sound pressure spectrum can be used to diagnose the
causes of sound development in machines.
In particular, the cause of the sound can be identified and evaluated
from the vibration and noise response of the machine using 2-
channel measurement with a microphone and acceleration transduc-
ers (bearing damage and errors, coupling errors, electrical faults).
Special feature:
Version 2 also enables the X-axis to be set to a third scale or an octave
scale.
The following microphone is recommended for measuring the sound
pressure spectrum:

Manufact.: THE MODAL SHOP Inc.

1776 Mentor Avenue

VIBCODE: Multimeter operation

Measuring with VIBCODE in the multimeter mode

Measurement tasks at VIBCODE measurement locations are normally
defined on the PC using OMNITREND software and then transferred
to the VIBROCORD FFT data collector. These measurements can no
longer be changed on the data collector and can only be processed in
the Route mode (see page 3-22ff).
Measurements with the VIBCODE transducer system can be per-
formed in the multimeter mode in the following situations:

a. If further measurements are necessary at a VIBCODE measure-

ment location that have not been defined as measurement tasks in
the route or in the pool.

b. If, during a route measurement, the VIBCODE transducer is

connected to a measurement location for which no measurement
task is defined (or for an uncoded, full code ring). VIBROCORD
then switches automatically into multimeter mode.

Route measurement

Route measurement
A route is a collection of repetitive measurements taken in a specified
sequence. The route measurements are collected at regular intervals.
The route is created on the PC using OMNITREND software and
transferred to the VIBROCORD FFT data collector. An essential
component of the route is the so-called Route Expert:

The Route Expert

always knows which tasks to perform at every measurement location.
In 'normal' situations, i.e. when signal levels remain within accept-
able range, the data collector only records individual characteristic
*Monitoring the rolling bearings of a values. Normally, one location* (e.g. on the impeller side of the
machine requires a measurement point bearing housing for measuring machine vibration) is provided for
on each bearing.
each machine. If, however, a parameter reading exceeds warning or
alarm limits**, the route expert automatically takes a spectrum
**The limit that triggers the diagnostic
measurement is defined in the OMNI- measurement at the offending location. These additional tasks
TREND software as an adaptive (spectra, characteristic overall values) are programmed for each
trigger. If no adaptive trigger is location by the OMNITREND PC program and are activated 'only in
defined, the diagnostic measurement is case of 'emergency'.
triggered if the lowest limit is exceeded.

General instructions for the route mode

1. Measurements made in the route mode are automatically saved
when all the tasks at the measurement location are complete. The
measurements are stored in a separate directory that cannot be
viewed by the user.
2. The following additional information can also be transferred with
each route that is downloaded by the PC to the data collector:
Alarm and warning limits
Frequency markings (in spectra; see page 3-11)
Reference overall value and previous measured overall value

3. Routes that are already complete but have not yet been uploaded
to the PC can be repeated. In particular, individual measurement
tasks can be repeated.
4. After the uploading of a route to the PC, this route is deleted in the
VIBROCORD FFT data collector.
5. Measurement tasks at a measurement location are automatically
executed one after the other if the same transducer is used.

FNote
The VIBROCORD must be updated to version 1.34/2.04 or higher
in order to communicate with the OMNITREND software version
1.3/ 2.0 or higher.

Pool

VIBCODE route
VIBCODE locations at which the condition data of the machines are
to be collected routinely at regular intervals, are collected together to
form a route. These locations can be processed in any order as the
VIBCODE uses an automatic location identification.
VIBCODE Pool
Pool locations can be seen as a set of 'reserve' points that are not part
of the route and are measured only as needed. These locations are
only completed after being called up, i.e. after the VIBCODE
transducer has been connected, the location identified and the stored
task retrieved. The pool is loaded into the VIBROCORD FFT data
collector together with the corresponding route.

CHANNEL: Enter the inputs to be used for measurement:

A: One-channel measurement
B: One-channel measurement
A+B: Two-channel measurement
T: Trigger input (e.g. for rpm measurement)
DURATION: Length of time required to take a single measurement of
vibration/shock pulse/cavitation (e.g. vRMS)
VIBROCORD 01.01

LINES: Resolution setting for time signal or spectrum display.

The interval between adjacent lines is indicated by the
value within parentheses.
Note: The higher the resolution (number of lines), the
longer the duration of each measurement.
4-14
Appendix: SETUP parameters

SCALE: Maximum fvequency range of a spectrum.

TIME: Time window in which the time signal is recorded.
AVERAGING: Four different averaging methods are available:
None: Every individual measurement is displayed.
Linear average: A specified number of individual measurements are
added together, then divided by the number of measurements.
Exponential average: Individual measurements are averaged expo-
nentially (i.e. the most recent values have the most influence).
Peak hold: The maximum values from the sample range are retained
for display.

F
Note
The data collector activates its internal trigger function whenev-
er time signals are averaged, since the signals would otherwise
average out to zero.

The first number following the type of averaging indicates how

many individual readings are to be averaged. Any desired
setting between 1 and 999 may be used.
The next parameter switches between dynamic ('Dyna') and
static ('Stat') averaging.
'Dyna': every individual measurement is displayed
'Stat': only the final result is displayed
The last number in the line indicates the delay between
individual measurements.
TRIGGER: The trigger signal determines the starting point of the
measurement. The following trigger functions are available:
none: a new measurement is begun as soon as the previous one is
completed (uncontrolled).
Channel, rising: a new measurement is begun when the input signal
level (from channel A or B or the trigger input) climbs above the
trigger threshold setting. This threshold is specified in percent of
maximum signal strength; negative values are possible.
Channel, falling: a new measurement is begun when the input signal
level (from channel A or B or the trigger input) falls below the
trigger threshold setting. This threshold is specified in percent of
maximum signal strength; negative values are possible.
Note: the 'trigger' channel is the TTL input (threshold: 2.5V,
fixed).
WINDOW: When a periodic signal is measured, the beginning and/or
end of the time signal are truncated (left off) when measurement
begins and ends. This phenomenon causes the peaks in the
frequency spectrum to appear slightly wider and shorter than a
perfectly accurate depiction. Window functions are used to com-
pensate these effects for more accurate determination of spectral-
peak frequencies and amplitudes. VIBROCORD offers the follow-
VIBROCORD 01.01

ing three different window functions:

Rectangular: This window weights all components equally (and so
can be thought of as no window at all). It is useful when signal
level begins and ends at zero (such as with transients, pulses or
4-15
Appendix: SETUP parameters

noise signals). It provides maximum amplitude accuracy when

signal truncation is not a consideration, but amplitude error can
reach 40% if the signal is cut off.
Hanning: This window is used for general vibration measurement
and results in the lowest frequency errors. It is the most popular
window for FFT analysis, although the peak amplitude can be
damped (errors up to 15%)
Kaiser: This window provides less amplitude errors than the Hanning
window (errors approx. 12%).
Flat top: This provides less frequency accuracy than the Hanning
window, but does depict amplitude with greater accuracy (only
about 0.1% error).
RPM: Any parameter can be measured in relation to machine RPM.
This setting allows either direct entry of RPM or measurement
using an RPM sensor (see also 'bearing condition', page 3-6). RPM
is stored along with the measured machine parameter.

This parameter must be set to 'measure' or 'enter' in order to

allow display of rpm-dependent damage frequencies (page 3-
11) in the spectrum.
FNote

TRANSDUCER: Transducer SETUP; see page 3-13.

RANGE: This setting determines the amplitude range (Y axis) and is
dependent upon transducer sensitivity. The default setting is
'Auto'-ranging, i.e. VIBROCORD calculates the maximum possible
amplitude range to prevent overloading during measurement.
This range setting may be made independently for two-channel
measurements.
MEASUREMENT PARAMETER: The (vibration) measurement parameter may
be selected here, for example, in order to use an accelerometer to
measure vibration velocity. When user-defined (E.U.) units are to
be measured, the specified measurement parameter appears here
(see transducer SETUP).
FILTER: Filter frequency range setting. The signal carrier frequency
must lie within the filter range (not for envelope).
ENVELOPE (Only for spectrum/ time signal): The envelope function
filters out and displays a modulated low-frequency signal from the
overall vibration signal. The following functions are available:
None (envelope analysis deactivated)
Simple (simple envelope)
ORDER*: In the recording of time signals, in phase measurements and * in Version 2 only
in balancing*, order filters can be used for the RPM harmonic
vibration components. In case of time signal, this means that the
VIBROCORD 01.01

sinus components of the order is filtered out and displayed. Thus,

in the XY display of two channel signals, only an ellipse is
displayed and the components of all other harmonics are sup-
pressed.

VIBCODE
One of the biggest pitfalls to condition trending is ensuring reliable
measurement. Missing measurents or ones taken at the wrong
location or through use of improper technique can throw off the
trend curve. The result: unnecessary intervention or, worse, a false
sense of security as machine condition deteriorates.
Now, however the VIBCODE measurement system ensures total
trending reliabity by automatically identifying the measurement
location. The intelligent VIBCODE transducer locks onto the specially
encoded VIBCODE mesaurement stud to read its location and take all
required types of readings with perfect repeatability. The unique
code for each stud is generated by OMNITREND PC software, which
also programs the measurements to be taken at each location.

VIBROCORD with
VIBCODE transducer
and measurement stud

VIBCODE transducer
The VIBCODE transducer contains a code ring sensor and a combined
vibration/shock pulse sensor for measurement of machine vibration,
bearing condition and cavitation. The transducer locks onto the
VIBCODE stud via bayonet mount in optimum position and with
consistent pressure. Trend readings are taken with perfect repeatabil-
ity regardless of operator qualification and training.
The code ring sensor reads the tooth pattern of the plastic ring in the
measurement stud to determine its location so that the correct types
of measurement can be taken. Mixups, erroneous trend deviations
and time-consuming repeat measurements are all eliminated once
and for all.
The VIBCODE transducer plugs into sensor input A on the VIBRO-
CORD data collector (see page 2-7).

VIBCODE measurement stud

The measurement stud contains a plastic code ring with 17 knockout
tabs. These tabs are broken off with the VIBCODE ring encoding tool
(VIB 8.692) according to the unique pattern generated by the
OMNITREND PC program for each measurement location. The
measurement stud is then mounted on the machine as shown below:

Appendix: Trigger sensor

Trigger sensor
Tle trigger sensor detects changes in contrast on rotating parts such
as shafts and couplings. When the contrast mark on the shaft passes
the trigger lens, the sensor emits an electrical pulse to the VIBRO-
CORD. The resulting sequence of voltage pulses is used to determine
the shaft RPM.

Active trigger sensor VIB 4.307

A reflective mark must be applied to the shaft or coupling to elicit
measurement pulses from the trigger. VIB 3.306 reflective tape
should be used.
Intended use: Rotor balancing and comprehensive analy-
sis measurements using bracket mounting
Distance from shaft: 5 to 40 mm / 3/16" to 1 1/2"
Special characteristics: Unaffected by ambient lighting conditions

Thanks to its advanced design, the trigger sensor is not affected when
moved horizontally. Its specialized optics guarantee maximum sensi-
tivity in rotation direction when mounted correctly (as illustrated
below).

Mounting the trigger sensor

0. Make sure the machine is switched off before proceeding.
1. Assemble the VIB 4.330 trigger bracket (s. page 4-24).
2. Connect trigger sensor to VIBROCORD with trigger cable
(VIB 5.631-5, page 2-7).

Observe the groove on the sensor socket for proper orientation.

Tighten the sensor cable into place with the knurled cable fitting.
Attention!

3. Mount the trigger sensor on its bracket in the proper orientation to

the reflective mark as shown below:

The symbol on the trigger sensor housing indicates proper orienta-

FNote
tion as shown above:
- The green arrow on the end of the sensor must point toward the
reflective mark in parallel orientation.
- The sensor tip may be mounted from 5 mm up to 40 mm from
the reflective mark or as necessary if the trigger signal is not
detected.
Avoid direct exposure to light sources such as fluorescent lamps
which can interfere with the trigger signal.
In case of doubt, cover the trigger lens momentarily, then try
again: the trigger then readjusts its contrast sensitivity to the
prevailing lighting conditions.

Before switching machines back on, check to ensure that no
bracket parts, cable etc. can become caught in rotating parts. Attention!

ISO vibration monitoring standard

In order to monitor vibration severity according to ISO 2372 (covered
by the new ISO 10816-3 standard), you must set the alarm and
warning limits according to the appropriate machine classification.
This classification is determined according to machine power and
foundation characteristics as follows:
ISO 2372 (not valid any more!)
Group S: Small machines up to 15 kW;
Group M: Medium-sized machines (15 - 75 kW);
Group L: Large machines (75 - 300 kW) on rigid foundations
Group T: Turbomachinery (over 75 kW) on elastic foundations

ISO 10816-3
Group 1: Large machines, 300 kW to 50 MW
Group 2: Medium-sized machines, 15 kW to 300 kW

Troubleshooting
Problem: LCD screen flickers.
Cause: Interference from external light sources (e.g. fluorescent
lighting)
Remedy: Shade screen from direct light source or use other
illumination.

Problem: RPM-dependent characteristic damage frequencies (such

as harmonics) fail to appear in spectrum display.
Cause: RPM SETUP parameter is not activated.
Remedy: Set RPM parameter in SETUP to 'measured' or 'entered'.

Problem: Multimeter measurement cannot be saved.

Cause: Measurement is invalid if amplifier is under- or overload-
ed.
Remedy: Repeat measurement, pressing 'AUTO' softkey to set
proper sensitivity automatically.

Problem: Display does not appear or appears very weak when

instrument is switched on.
Cause: Display contrast misadjusted for current lighting condi-
tions.
Remedy: Press '0' or '1' key until main screen becomes visible (this
function is available only immediately upon startup).

Problem: The device wont exit the Sleep mode. The boot process
enters an endless loop.
Cause: The battery pack and reserve battery are depleted
Remedy: Connect the battery charger (ALI 3.576), or replace the
reserve battery.

Problem: Instrument crashes.

Cause: Various
Solution 1: Press the ON/OFF, CLR , ENTER keys at the same time.
Solution 2: If the message: 'Not ready reading drive A: ...Abort,
Retry, Fail' appears on the screen , press the ON/OFF key
for 15 seconds. The instrument switches off when you
release the key. Restart by pressing the ON/OFF key.
Solution 3: If the welcoming screen 'freezes' after the instrument is
switched on, you must delete the contents of the main
memory. To do this, proceed as follows:
a) Switch on the instrument as described in 1).
VIBROCORD 01.01

b) While switching it on, hold down the CLR key for

approx. 10 seconds.

Appendix: Rescue programm

VIBROCORD rescue programm

The rescue programm offers a means of quickly restoring the
VIBROCORD computer in the unlikely event that its flash memory
card should fail, thereby preventing the program from starting. The
programm, which runs under Windows 95 (but not under Windows
NT or 3.x), lets you reformat the card and load a PC communication
program onto it, with which the measurement firmware can be
downloaded from a PC using the VIBROCORD Upgrade Manager
program VIB 5.606.
Procedure
1. Switch off the VIBROCORD computer by pressing the ON/OFF
key for 15 seconds.
2. Insert the OMNITREND-CD in your PC CD-ROM drive, and wait
until the start screen appears.
3. Install the rescue program from the CD by clicking on Update
VIBROCORD and then on Rescue Disc. Follow the instructions
on the display. If the start screen does not automatically appear,
then execute the file Setup.exe in the CD file-folder \rescue\.
4. Connect the AC adapter/charger to the VIBROCORD computer or
make sure that the main battery supply has sufficient charge left
for at least 30 minutes.
5. Connect the VIBROCORD computer to the PC using only a fully-
leaded serial cable such as the SYS 2.711-2 PC cable.
6. Start the 'ROTALIGN PRO Rescue' program* on the PC.
7. In the first screen, select the 'Emergency boot' application and *VIBROCORD and ROTALIGN PRO use

(with any errors) to the PC. Enter a name for the backup file and
then click on 'Next'. This procedure takes about 30 minutes.
8. Select the COM port to which the VIBROCORD computer is
connected, then click on 'NEXT'.
9. Switch on the VIBROCORD computer and follow the instructions
in the display.
10. When the memory-check starts (0-640k are checked), click on the
Connect button on the PC screen.
This step must be followed carefully, as the memory check only
lasts about 3 seconds! When the connection is made, the ID
number appears; then click on 'Next'.
11. Click on 'Finish' and confirm your intent to launch the emergency
salvage procedure.
