Hs acts at h/2 from the base = 1.5 m 4.9215 ft

In the preceding calculations, it is assumed that the backfill is dry, but it is necessary to investigate
the presence of water pressure behind the wall. The maximum water pressure occures when the whole
height of the basement wall is subjected to water pressure, and:
w = w h = 3000 Kg/m 0.626566 Ksf

Hw = 4500 Kg/m 3.084 K/ft of Wall

The maximum pressure may not be present continuously behind the wall. Therefore, if the ground is
intermittently wet, a percentage of the preceding pressure may be adopted, say 50%:

Pw/2 = 1500 Kg/m 0.313283 Ksf

Hw' = 2250 Kg/m 1.542 K/ft of Wall

Hw' acts at h/3 from the base = 1 m 3.281 ft water may be prevented from
collecting against the wall by providing drains at the lower end of the wall.
In addition to drain, a waterproofing or damp-proofing membrane must be laid or applied to the external
face of the wall. The ACI Code, Section 14.5, specifies that the minimum thickness of an exterior
basement wall and its foundation is 7.5 in. In general, the minimum thickness of bearing walls is 1/25
of the supported height or length, whichever is shorter, nor less than 100mm.

Then bar diameter = 11.63 mm
Use 4 of Bar No. 12 Spacing = 25 cm on each side of the wall.

Note:
If the bending moment at the base of the wall is quite high, it may require a thick wall slab, for example
12 in. (30cm) or more. A hunch may be adopted which will reduce the thickness of the wall, because it
will be desinged for the moment at the section exactly above the haunch.
The basement slab may have a thickness greater than the wall thickness and may be extended outside
the wall by about 10in. (25cm) or more, as required.
