(a) It is necessary to construct a modern multistoried government administrative building in a
very busy congested area in the suburbs of Colombo after demolishing an old and
independent multistoried building. Briefly explain important aspects which need to be
considered in the demolition of the existing building.
(b)Testing of cement can be brought under two categories; Filed testing and Laboratory testing. Briefly
explain different fields tests carried out when cement is used for minor works.
(c)Write explanatory notes on the following terms related to concrete;

road.

differences between the two.
(c) Explain the purpose of having a wearing course for a road with a flexible pavement.
(d) Explain two different methods available for ensuring stability and safety of excavations.
Also discuss their advantages and disadvantages in detail.

(a)Describe different types of joints used in water retaining structures. Draw sketches where
necessary to elaborate your answer.

(b)Explain the term cofferdam. Also explain the points that should be kept in mind when
constructing a cofferdam.

(c) Describe the following elements of an earth dam. You may use diagrams to
illustrate your answer.
i) Vertical or inclined filter
ii) Core trench
iii) Toe filter
(d). Describe different types of cracks in hardened concrete and how they can be identified.
