To introduce the partitioning.
To use the partitioning to double and halve numbers up to 3 digits.

Students Prior Knowledge:


They know how to double and halve the numbers.

Possible Problems and Misconceptions:


They might not understand the way of partitioning the numbers.
They might take long time in the main activity.

Solutions:
Give examples for the partitioning and try to describe it easy ways, ask a student to solve one problem
in the board and describe how he\she works it out.
Use a timer to remind the students of how long do they have.

Engage (warm up, review prior knowledge): time:10 min


The teacher will give each group a work sheet with 3 questions to review the double and halve. The
first group will finish with all correct answer, will win.
Then, the teacher will introduce the partitioning by define what it is, she will solve 3-4 questions using
the partitioning. To make it easier for the students she will use the once, tens, hundred cups to solve
the questions.

Core (introduce and practice new concepts & procedures): 20 min


In peers the teacher will give work sheets with ten different questions. In the begging it will be easy
questions but as going down it will be harder. Example of the questions 33 double by 2.

The two boxes are for the partitions number, and if the number has 3 digits, there will be 3 boxes.
In this activity there are different questions for different level.
LA: They will use portioning to double or halve numbers up to 20.
MA: They will use portioning to double or halve numbers up to 100.
HA: They will use portioning to double or halve numbers up to 3 digits number.
They can use once, tens, hundreds blocks to help them solving the questions, also they can use the
times table.
The teacher will use a timer to remind the students of how much time left.

Close (wrap up, discussion, brief review activity or assessment): 10 min


The teacher will choose one student from each table to solve one question on the board.
