QUESTION 1 [20 marks]

(a) Torque is transmitted between two identical diameter, D, discs, through an oil
film of thickness S. The driving shaft rotates at 1 and the driven shaft rotates at
2, as shown in Figure 1. Assume a linear velocity profile across the oil film.

(i) Derive an expression representing the transmitted torque, T, as a function of

1, 2, S, R and , where R is the radius of the discs and is the dynamic
viscosity of the oil. [9 marks]

(ii) Find the value of the transmitted torque, T, if = 2.9 101 Ns/m2, 1 =
1,500 rpm, 2 = 1,453 rpm, S = 4 mm and D = 27 cm. [5 marks]

(b) A layer of kerosene flows on a flat surface with a non-uniform velocity profile as
shown in Figure 2. The velocity profile is given as:

2U U
u= y + 2 y2
H H

where U is the velocity at height H and u is the varying velocity that changes
with vertical distance y. Velocity U is 7 m/s at height H = 0.3 m. [Kerosene =
1.92 10-3 Ns/m2]

Determine the shear stress at the surface of the kerosene, where y = H.

Question 2 [20 marks]

A semi-circle gate, with a radius of 2.5 m, forms part of a tank wall that is inclined at
40 from the horizontal, as shown in Figure 3. The base of the gate is hinged at 6 m
vertically from the surface. The tank holds water with H2O = 9,790 N/m3. A force, F,
is applied at the top of the gate to stop the gate from opening. Ignore the weight of the
gate.

(b) Find the magnitude of the hydrostatic force acting on the gate, FCP. [4 marks]

(c) Calculate the inclined height from the surface to the centroid of the gate, yCG.
