UTILITIES AND WASTE

DISPOSAL
UTILITIES

Water
Manila Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) is the water supplier of Sta. Maria Industrial
Park. Water serves as the cleaning medium per equipment and also as the coolant in the
heat exchangers and vaporizer.

Electricity
Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) is the power distributor of Sta. Maria
Industrial Park. The electricity cost covers the power requirements of the major equipment
which involve unit processing and unit operations, and for the transport of processing
materials which include compressors and pumps. In addition, electricity is used for basic
functions like lighting, ventilating system and controls.

Fuel
Nitroline Philippines Corp., will be using Diesel fuel for the reboiler needed in the
distillation equipment.

Shell Thermia Oil B

NPC will utilize Shell Thermia Oil B as the coolant for both the fluidized bed-reactor
and condenser.
WASTE DISPOSAL

Wastewater
Wastewaters from an industrial plant are generally treated before being disposed in
bodies of water. Nitroline Philippines Corporation classified its waste to be the water in the
aqueous layer coming from the decanter. When aniline is manufactured from
nitrobenzene, an understanding of phase equilibria is important in the separation of the
aniline product from the water of reaction and their subsequent purification. Soluble water
must be removed from the aniline oil, and the aniline soluble in the water phase must be
treated prior to discharge to minimize environmental contamination. The present
discussion concentrates on treatment of the water phase. NPC is the first company in the
Philippines to produce aniline thats why it will have its own wastewater treatment,
ensuring that the company will comply with the environmental regulations.
The treatment is designed to be a steam stripper of aniline process waste water to
reduce the load on downstream waste water to be released by the plant. Stripping, also
called desorption, is a separation method where the multicomponent liquid and a gas are
made to contact, to move a component from the liquid to the gas phase. During a stripping
process, the temperature may be increased, the pressure reduced, or both. Stripping is
often used to remove small amounts, ppm, of gas or organic solvent from water.
The allowable amount of aniline in wastewater is 1 ppm to 30 ppm. The stream
entering the stripper is the higher boiling material or the aqueous layer coming from the
decanter. This layer consists of vast amount of water that will be harmful if not treated.
Steam is used as the desorption medium and trace amounts of aniline will be attached to it
giving a less contaminated wastewater.
Gaseous Waste

The Philippines Clean Air Act of 1999 (Republic Act No. 8749) is the environment
protection for air pollution, it is a emission standard for the motor vehicles and production
industry to reduce air pollution. These emissions are set by The Department of
Environment and Natural Resources as Implementing Rules and Regulations for Philippine
Clean Air Act of 1999. These rules and regulations will apply to all manufacturing industry
and other establishments which are potential sources of air pollution. In addition, the
company will comply with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the
reduction of air pollution since a smaller amount of flue gas of high temperature are
emitted from the production plant given that most of the energy is recycled.

Hydrogen is lighter than air and diffuses rapidly. Hydrogen has a rapid diffusivity
(3.8 times faster than natural gas), which means that when released, it dilutes quickly into
a non-flammable concentration. Hydrogen rises 2 times faster than helium and 6 times
faster than natural gas at a speed of almost 45 mph (20m/s).Therefore,unless a roof,a
poorly ventilated room or some other structure contains the rising gas, the laws of physics
prevent hydrogen from lingering near a leak (or near people using hydrogen-fueled
equipment). Hydrogen is non-toxic and non-poisonous. It will not contaminate
groundwater (its a gas under normal atmospheric conditions), nor will a release of
hydrogen contribute to atmospheric pollution. Hydrogen does not createfumes. However,
technology reports that the leaked hydrogen gas that would inevitably result from a
hydrogen economy, if it accumulates, could indirectly cause as much as a 10-percent
decrease in atmospheric ozone. The estimates of potential damage to stratospheric ozone
levels are based on an atmospheric modeling program that tests the various scenarios that
might result, depending on how much hydrogen ends up in the stratosphere from all
sources, both natural and anthropogenic. The hydrogen gas purged into the environment
by NPC will be treated by Evergreen Environmental Resources,Inc. (EVERGREEN) located
at Sta. Maria Industrial Park (SMIP), Brgy. Bulac, Sta. Maria, Bulacan.
