Unit Title: Exploring Quadratics in our world Name: Rebecca Manzo

Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level: 9-10th grade
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
Creating Equations A-CED
2. Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales.

Linear, Quadratic, and Exponential Models F-LE

Construct and compare linear, quadratic, and exponential models and solve problems.
1. Distinguish between situations that can be modeled with linear functions and with exponential functions.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Big Ideas
The big idea for this unit is going for is to get students to answer:
"What are quadratic equations?"
When am I ever going to use this?
"Where can I find quadratic equations?"

Student Learning Objectives

Students will understand quadratic equations and the meaning of their parts.
Students will document the meaning of the size of the leading co-efficient, the meaning of the sign of the leading co-efficient and discuss the
relationship between the exponent and the symmetry of the resulting graph (parabola)
Using photographs students will explore a series of quadratics with changing numbers and signs.
In the activity students will learn how to find the line of symmetry and the roots.

Unit Summary:
Students will be able to relate the parts of the quadratic equation into real world applications. ie. see a negative leading co-efficient of a parabola is
shaped like an n (water fountain ) versus a positive leading co-efficient the parabola open upwards like a u (banana). Students will learn what
quadratic equations are, how to solve them, along with how to graph them. Students will be able to apply what they have learned about quadratics to
be able to see how these can be found in nature and life around us. Through the use of lecture, discussion and prior knowledge students will be able to
apply what they have learned to find quadratics in life around us.
