As a young man, Jack ONeil worked for a big company, but he always went to the beach in his free time. He loved
surfing, but the Californian ocean was cold. Jack wanted to find a way to say warm in the water and he started to make
protective clothing for cold water, or surfing suits, also called wetsuits. In 1952 he stopped working for the company
and opened the first Surf Shop. He sold surfboards and wetsuits. Jack demonstrated his wetsuits at boat exhibitions. He
took his three young children with him. They wore wetsuits and sat in a bath of ice. When people asked: Whats a
wetsuit? Jack pointed to his children. ONeil is a family-run company.
Jack lost his eye in a surfing accident, but he still surfs today
