1. Identification of the operational definitions (1-n sentences)

2. Identification of the hypothesis(es)/or research question (1-3
sentences)
Waddel, Pepler and Moore (2001) researched childhood sibling relationships
(dependent/criterion variable) in violent and non-violent families
(independent/predictor variable). The mother reporting physical violence
between adult partners in the past year defined a violent family. A non-
violent family was defined as the mother reporting no physical violence
between adult partners since the siblings were 2 years of age.

3. Short Description of design (1-2 sentences)

4. Description of data collection procedures (1-3 sentences)
To gain information on family members, education, socioeconomic status,
marital status, and demographics, the mothers filled out the Family
Information Form (FIF). The Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS) was completed by
the mothers to assess behaviors used in familial conflict situations. In this
study, one form filled out for each sibling to assess the mothers view of
conflict resolutions in the sibling relationship. The mothers completed the
Child Behavior Checklist-Parent Form (CBCL) to standardize behavior
problems (internalizing, externalizing and total behavioral problems) and
social competences (activities, social and school). The mothers also filled
out the Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (SRQ-P) Parent Short Version, in
which the parent rates the childs relationship with the sibling (warmth-
closeness, relative status-power and conflict). The children completed the
Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (SRQ-C) Child, Short Version to assess
each childs view of his or her sibling (similar structure and factor as the
SRQ-P). Individual interviews were conducted with mothers and children.
An observation was also done, where the siblings were videotaped during a
cooperative (Etch A Sketch) and competitive task (Trouble). The
observation was coded using a two-step coding system with intercoder
reliability means in the 80s.

5. Description and discussion of statistical analysis used (1-4

sentences)
1. Discussion of results/findings and its accuracy (1-4 sentences)
MANOVAs were used to test all hypotheses about the sibling relationships.
Results indicated that children living in shelters had more internalizing
problems than children from non-violent families. Contrary to the
hypothesis that violent family children would be rated more violent, a trend
was found in comparison, non-violent group mothers to report higher levels
of physical violence and physical abuse between siblings. Siblings from the
violent families were more likely to be supportive of each other.

7. Limitations, Generalizability (1-3 sentences)

8. Summary-Your overall impression of this studys research design
and statistical technique used ( appropriateness, correct use of
technique ) (2- 4 sentences)
9. Ability to lead a scholarly discussion as far as communication, and
quality regarding graphs, tables, writing as far as accurate and clear
reporting, including APA style of graphs, tables (1-3 sentences).

This study and past research indicates that children from violent families
have higher rates of behavioral and emotional problems. Although indicated
in past studies, it was not found in this current research that children of
violent families imitate poor problem-solving. Previous studies have
indicated that siblings are a support system during negative events. The
article was well written, with appropriate visual representations to help
explain results. Table 1 outlining the task behavior was particularly helpful.
The method was a solid combination of self-report measures and
observational coding, with appropriate analyses (MANOVAs several
dependent variables ANOVA would be to test means between two or more
groups) to test the hypotheses.
