communication jacket on the communication socket in
the vehicle.
The plug and cable in Figure F is used with the com-
munication jacket (see Figure E) on the communica-
tion socket on the vehicle.
The Figure G illustrates the adapter for older EDC sys-
Figure D tems. It is used with the communication jacket and the
cable (Figure F) to connect to the 2-pin socket on the
engine. The communication jacket needs power supp-
ly from the battery, thus, the external power supply con-
nectors (Figure H).

Operations
The operations that can be carried out depend on the
vehicle/machine connected to the special tool and the
authorization of the user. This depends on the vehicle/
machine being tested and the level of authorization of
the user. Because most operations are built up of stan-
dard components the same method can be used for all
operations. Instructions for undertaking individual tests
are available in the application. The first time you se-
lect an operation, which requires communication with
control units; the program reads off information from the
control units. This may take a minute or two.
If the installation is unknown to VODIA you may still be
able to run the operations Vehicle information, test and
Fault codes.

Fault codes
The purpose of this test is to read out error codes sto-
red in the vehicle/machine control units. The fault can
be selected from either individual or all control units.
Fault codes can be erased together or individually. All
fault codes are stored on the job card.
NOTE! All logged fault codes are erased when parame-
ters are programmed or read using VODIA. The fault
codes should be read off first and then Saved to a job
card to ensure that the fault code information is still
available later.
The error codes contain the following information:
MID (Message Identification Description): The con-
trol unit, which transmitted the fault code message.
The designation of the control unit is also displayed
in plain text (Engine control unit for example).
PID (Parameter Identification Description): The
Parameter that the error code applies to (accelera-
tor pedal for example).
PPID (Proprietary Parameter Identification Descrip-
tion): Volvo unique PID, see above.
SID (Subsystem Identification Description): The
component the error code applies to.
PSID (Proprietary SID): Volvo unique SID, see abo-
ve.
FMI (Failure Mode Identifier): Type of fault.
Number of occurrences: The number of times that
the error code has been stored.
Status: Whether the fault code is active or inactive.
First occurrence: Time when the error code was first
stored.
Last occurrence: Time when the error code was
last stored.
Total engine hours: The total number of hours the
engine has been run

The cylinder compression test indicates if there is any
deviation in compression in any cylinder in relation to
the other cylinders. For the values to be accurate the
