ENGI 8691/9100 Assignment 7 solution

Part I

We use an excel sheet to calculate the production rate:

For different Kv and reservoir thickness, use the following equation to calculate different
Iani, C and lnC.

Based on 3 different Kv and 3 different thicknesses we can get:

Kh(mD) 8.2
Kv(mD) 8.2 131 0.9
h(ft) 25 53 250 25 53 250 25 53 250
Iani 1 1 1 0.25 0.25 0.25 3.02 3.02 3.02
C 38.11 80.79 381.10 15.25 32.34 152.53 57.25 121.37 572.52
lnC 3.64 4.39 5.94 2.72 3.48 5.03 4.05 4.80 6.35

The well lengths from 0 ft to 2000 ft in steps of 100 ft, calculate different a and lnA

Plot production rate as a function of well length for these 9 cases, the result is shown in
figure below.
ENGI Assignment 7 Solution Spring 2013

From the figure we can know that for thick reservoir the flow rate is very sensitive to Iani,
which means the great impact of good vertical permeability in thick formations is evident
from a horizontal well.In the thinner formations the flow rate is less sensitive to the
vertical permeability.

We can clearly see that at a fixed wellbore pressure the higher the average pressure is, the
higher the flow rate we can get.

We know the expression for Fetkovich correlation:

When = 4350 , we can calculate the flow rate at corresponding wellbore pressure
by using Vogel correlation. We can also calculate 2

Calculate the gas compressibility at initial reservoir pressure:

At initial reservoir pressure and temperature:
