Wildlife Biologist and Conservationist

Without hunting there would be no conservation, without conservation there would be no

wildlife - Rob Keck, the past CEO of the NWTF

Since I was little I always loved being outdoors. Hunting, fishing and trapping, and even

preparing for the next season in the off season I was always out there. From planting deer plots

in the summer to keep the deer fed to trapping summer time coyotes to help the increase of the

fawn population. Once I saw it was not just about the kill but the time and effort that was put in

to grow bigger and better deer that's what makes it all worth it. At that moment, that's when I

said to myself, I am gonna be a wildlife biologist and conservationist to conserve the wildlife

and make it better to hunt. Is it productive to put in time and effort to grow deer plots , trap

coyotes or manage flooded timber for the ducks, or other wildlife a person might be managing to

make the kill at the even bigger and better? Education, salary, and positives and negatives are all

important when considering a career as a Wildlife Biologist.

It takes a good while in college to become a certified wildlife biologist. It is a minimum

of a bachelor's degree, but now most employers would like you to have a master's degree. There

are many colleges that offer a wildlife biology program. For example, the University of Georgia

offers a program called fisheries and wildlife with wildlife science area of emphasis. This

program allows students to become a certified wildlife biologist before leaving. As stated by

Warnell Forestry School at UGA, Students choosing the wildlife sciences area of emphasis will
fulfill the educational requirements to become Certified Wildlife Biologists, as stipulated by The

Wildlife Society. There are many different programs that can be done to become a wildlife

biologist.

When going into the career and spending 4 years in college , a salary is a big concern

when ready to start to work. As the Bureau of Labor statistics states , The median pay is

$60,520 per year or $29.10 per hour , with a bachelor's degree. It also has a, 8% growth

from 2016 to 2026 according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics and according to lear.org it

states , a 4% growth from 2014 to 2014. This is all important when considering the job, but

what might a day look like? A day for a wildlife biologist may include banding waterfowl and

getting information from them, studying ways to plant better deer plots, studying big game

hunters have harvested or even realizing injured wildlife. These are important areas to consider

because there is so much these scientist are required to do. Studying wildlife and learning the

ways of the wildlife is what this career is all about.

Like in all jobs there is always the pros and cons. Some good things about the job would

be that there are lots of job opportunities in the south east and according to the Bureau of Labor

Statistics, In Georgia that there are 290 job availabilities throughout the state. Next, its a

good paying job, it's mostly all outdoors, and you get to have fun with wildlife and experience

wildlife. Some of the cons would be it can be dangerous, can be emotional to some, can get hot

and nasty on some days and some work days might be long and tiring. Those are some good and

bad about the job , also there are some important qualities you might need. Communications,

critical thinking, emotional stamina and stability, interpersonal skills, observation skills , outdoor

skills, and a problem solver with many more.

Education, salary, and positives and negatives are all important when considering a career

as a Wildlife Biologist. If considering to be a Wildlife Biologist, it is important to look all of

what needs to get done and are if your right for the job. As Theodore Roosevelt once said,

Wildlife and its habitat cannot speak, so we must and we will. If you are passionate about

conserving wildlife and like to study and learn about wildlife and their habitats and even

managing wildlife, this is the right job.
