2Basicoperation&display

2.1 Scope

Thischapterdescribesthebasicoperationformariners,includingstartingup,main
indicationandbasicoperationonthechart.

2.2 How to start up and shut down the ECDIS

2.2.1StartuptheECDIS

PleaseconfirmthebelowstepswhentheECDISisstartedup.

PleaseconfirmthepowerforMCU,AcquisitionUnit&DisplayUnitisnormal;
ConfirmtheeTokenisconnectedtheMCUsteadily;
SwitchonthepowerforDisplayUnit;
SwitchonthepowerforMCU;
Whenthebelowimageappears,theECDISisstarttotestitself.

Please click OK to start the system when the below dialogue SYSTEM TEST

NOTE: The message on the dialogue means that all communication ports of the ECDIS are
normal.

TherearethreemethodstoswitchofftheECDIS:

PleaseusetheshortcutkeysCtrl+EtoshutdowntheECDIS;

2.3 Basic Operation on the chart

2.3.1ControlUnit

Thecontrolunitisdividedaskeyboardandthetrackball.

Usually the left/right key of track ball is the same as the mouse, except that it is
speciallydescribeonthismanual.

2.3.2DisplayUnit

The on screen display (OSD) contains several functions that will let the mariner to
adjustorsetupthedisplaytotheirpreferredconfiguration.

Caution:Theconfigurationissetinfactory.Itisforbiddentoadjustthebasicsetting.

TheDimmingKnob:
Thedisplayunitsupportdimmingfunctiontoadjustbrightnessfrom
nearly0%to100%withthisknob.

PowerOn/Off
Pressthisbuttontoswitchon/offthedisplayunitpower.

DisplayStatusLEDIndicator
Whenthedisplayunitrunsnormally,theLEDindicatorturnstogreen
light.Whenthedisplayunitgoestosleep,theLEDindicatorturnsto
readlight.

AUTO
TheDisplayunitwilladjusttheimageautomaticallywhenpressing.

2.3.3MoveChart

Themarinercouldmovechartbythreemethods:

Pleaseleftclickthesideofthechart,andthechartwillmovetothisdirectory.For
example,themarinercouldclicktheleftsidethecurrentscreen,andtheSENCwill
movetoleft;

Pleaseholdtherightmousebuttonandmovethecursortothewanteddirectory.
Andthescreenwillmovetothisdirectoryatthesametime.Releasetherightmouse
button,andthemovingwillbestopped;

PleasepressCtrl+onthecontrolunittomovethecurrentchart.

Caution:PleasecanceltheNavigationmodeonthemovingchart.Otherwisethe
displayislockedontheownship.Thenavigationmodeisselectedindefaultwhenthe
ECDISisstartup.

2.4 Main Indication

ThisisthemainindicationwhenthemarinerselectstheENCafterstartup.

2.4.1NorthArrow&Unit

2.4.1.1 North Arrow

Thisicon isthenortharrowfortheENC

Thenortharrowisalwaysshownatthetopleftcornerofthechartdisplay,justclear
ofthescalebarorthelatitudescale.Andthedefaultorientationisnorthup.

Ifthedisplayedareatogetherwithusedprojectionissuchthatdirectionofthenorth
is not uniform over the displayed area (more than 20 difference in uniformity or
displayedareaisoverlatitude70)thentheNorthArrowshallindicatethedirection
ofNortheitheratownshiplocationoratthecenterofthedisplayedarea.Insuchcase
apermanentindicationatownshiporatcentershallbeclosetotheNorthArrow.

2.4.1.2 Unit

This icon is the measure unit for the ENC. The default unit is meter. And the

marinercouldadjustitasfootonMapReference.

2.4.2MessageArea

The right of the indication is the message area. It is made up of Minimap,


Navigation,Route&Generalinformation

Thebelowslideronthemessageareaisusedtoadjustthebackgroundtransparency
foreverypanel.

Theminimapprovidestheglobechartforthemariner.Althoughitisonlythegeneral
seachartandthelandcontour,Thecrewscouldswitchtoanypositionbyrightclickon
thegeneralchart.ItisveryusefulforthemarinertoplantherouteontheseveralENCs.

Caution:PleasecanceltheNavigationstateontheNavigationPanelifthemariner
switchestotheotherpositionwhichisoutofthecurrentENC.

2.4.2.2 Navigation

TheNavigationpanelismadeupofthreeparts:Position,Othernavigationdataand
Navigationmode.Theindicationisasbelowwhenalldataisnormal:

NOTE 1: All the data and characters displayed on the Navigation Panel depend on the
navigation equipments. The navigation equipments are GPS, Gyro Compass, Echo Sounder,
Speed Log, Anemometer, e.g.

NOTE 2: The position information comes from two GPS for ECDIS. Usually the GPS1 is master.
So there is only GP1 on the panel. When the GPS1 is out of order, the ECDIS will switch to the
GPS2 automatically. And the GP2 will be displayed on the panel. WhenbothGPSareoutof
order,theECDISwillstartDR(DeadReckoning)automatically.

NOTE3: When the navigation data is interrupted, the related item color will change to yellow and
red.

Thespeedandrelativedirectionfromwhichthewindappearstoblowwithreference
toamovingpoint;

There are two characters, but it always displays one character. It is depend on the
outputdataofanemometer:

[R]:Apparentwind.Windangleinrelationtothevesselsbow/centerlineandwind
speed,botharerelativetothe(moving)vessel.Windspeedisfeltwhenstandingon
the(moving)ship;

[T]: Theoretical / calculated wind. Wind angle in relation to the vessels bow /
centerlineandthewindspeedasifthevesselwasstationary.Onamovingship,these
datacanbecalculatedbycombiningthemeasuredrelativewindwiththevesselsown
speed.

NavigationMode
ThereisonesmallareaisusedtosettheMOB,mousecursorcoordinateanddisplay
modeforownship.

WhentheNavigationisselected,themarinercouldsetthedisplaymode.

NOTE1: When the Navigation is selected, the screen will be locked on the own ship. And the
crew could not do the any operation on the ENC.

NOTE2: When the True is selected, the own ship moves on the ENC. When the Relative is
selected, the own ship is locked on the screen and the ENC is moving according to the speed.

NOTE3: The ground stabilisation indicator is presented as a double arrowhead. The water
stabilisation indicator is presented as a single arrowhead.

NOTE4: The speed vector will be changed when the mariner change the scale for the current
ENC. The speed data comes from speed log (relative to water) or GPS (relative to ground). And
the ECDIS keeps monitoring the both data. So the speed vector will be changed only when the
scale for current ENC is large enough. For example, if the scale is 1:1000000 or 1:500000, there

is little change on the vector indication. But when the scale is 1:50000 or larger, there will be
much change on the vector indication. Like Figure 1.29.

The Admiralty Information Overlay (AIO) is a digital dataset that is designed to be


displayedoverENCsinECDISandotherchartdisplaysystemstoprovideadditional
informationtothenavigator.

The Admiralty Information Overlay contains all Admiralty Temporary & Preliminary
NoticestoMariners(T&PNMs)andprovidesadditionalpreliminaryinformationthat
isspecifictoENCs,suchasreportednavigationalhazardsthathavebeenincorporated
onpaperchartsbuthavenotyetbeenincludedinENCs.

TheOverlaygivesseafarersaneasywaytoviewtheinformationtheyneed,inaddition
tothestandardchart,tonavigatesafelyandcompliantly.TheOverlaymakespassage

planning simpler and safer by clearly showing where important Temporary or


Preliminarychangesmayimpactavoyage.Italsogivesseafarersthesameconsistent
pictureofthemaritimeenvironmentontheirECDISastheyhavealwayshadwiththe
Admiraltypaperchart.

The Overlay includes all Admiralty T&P NMs in force worldwide and additional
informationthatrelatesspecificallytoENCs,publishedasENCPreliminaryNMs(EP
NMs).

3.3.8.3 Indication

T&PNMs
All Admiralty T&P NMs that are in force are included in the Overlay. Each NM is
displayedasasimpleredpolygon (usually rectangular) with red hatched fill which
indicatestheareaaffectedbytheNM. EachNMcarriesthesameNMnumberthat
isusedintheAdmiraltyNoticestoMarinersBulletin.

The full text of the NM is included as an associated text file which can be
displayed by selecting the

Temporary Notice to Mariners or Preliminary Notice to Mariners feature in the


ECDIS Pick Report. AnyassociateddiagramscanalsobeviewedthroughthePick
Report.

EPNMs
ENCP(EP)NMscontainadditionalinformationthatisspecifictoENCsandcannotbe
publishedasastandardAdmiraltyT&PNM. TheseNMsaredisplayedinthesame
wayasT&PNMs,asasimpleredpolygon(usuallyrectangular)withredhatchedfill
whichindicatestheareaaffectedbytheNM. EachNMisallocatedauniqueEPNM
number.

The publication S57IHO Transfer Standard for Digital Hydrographic Data


describes the standard to be used for the exchange of digital hydrographic data
between national hydrographic offices and for its distribution to manufacturers,
marinersandotherdatausers.Forexample,thisstandardisintendedtobeusedfor
thesupplyofdataforECDIS.Thistransferanddistributionhastotakeplaceinsucha
waythatnoneofthemeaningofthedataislost.

ThepublicationS63IHODataProtectionScheme,laterreferredtoasthescheme,
describestherecommendedstandardfortheprotectionofENCinformation.Itdefines
securityconstructsandoperatingproceduresthatmustbefollowedtoensurethat
thedataprotectionschemeisoperatedcorrectlyandtoprovidespecificationsthat
allowparticipantstobuildS63compliantsystemsanddistributedatainasecureand
commerciallyviablemanner.

The Data Protection Scheme was prepared by the International Hydrographic

TheECDISgathertheEPFSdatafromtwoGPS.Andthisfunctionisactive,theECDIS
willkeepmonitoringthedatafromthebothGPS.Ifthedivergingdataismorethan
thevaluewhichisdefinedthemariner,theECDISwillgivethealert.

NOTE: The ship's position shall be derived from a continuous positioning system of an
accuracy consistent with the requirements of safe navigation. Whenever possible, a second
independent positioning source, preferably of a different type shall be provided. In such cases
ECDIS shall be capable of identifying discrepancies between the two sources.
