Post Lesson Reflection

To what extent were lesson objectives achieved?

The assessment data I collected was a Making Thinking Visible strategy called sentence
phrase word. In order for students to achieve a proficient standard they must have included
reasoning in their description that connects to the theme of fear in the overall passage. After
looking over the students work, mostly all students classified as proficient. Some students had
very unique thoughts that would classify as advanced; while other students clearly did not
include any elements of theme in their responses.

What changes, omissions, or additions to the lesson would you make if you were to teach
again?

For this lesson, I would have worked on my pacing and my transitions in order to ensure
clarity and organization throughout the lesson. During discussion, once I pose a question, I want
to work on waiting so students can think about their response. I want to give students more
time to ponder or do a think-pair-share. Also, once I move on to a different activity I want to
take time to re-focus the class. Slowing myself down and engaging with students is something I
would have changed for this lesson.
Another aspect I would have changed is having students break up into groups a little bit
later in the lesson. I had them break up into groups, but then instructed them to do individual
work. Changing this so students broke up into their POGIL groups once the group activity started
would have created better flow. Also, I should have only allowed one person per group respond
to Padlet. By doing so, I would have avoided the unnecessary pictures being posted on the
screen that had nothing to do with the lesson. In other words, if only one student used their
laptops in each group, this makes for less distractions and more focus.

What do you envision for the next lesson? (Continued practice, reteach content, etc.)

For the next lesson, students will be building upon the question: what does it mean to be
human? After studying fear and contemplating in what ways that emotion contributes to the
overall human experience, students will be able to apply what they learned to the book Lord of
the Flies. Fear is a common theme in Lord of The Flies, and by studying in out of context form
the book, students will be able to think more critically about the role fear plays in the novel.
However, I will use the assessment data to make sure I do not move forward until students
understand the concept of fear in relation to the essential question, what does it mean to be
human? This means, for next lesson, I can group students according to their levels of
achievement. One group, who understand fear, can do a more advanced assignment like

analyzing a passage from Lord of The Flies that relates to fear. While another group can
continue the same activity in order for them to move to proficient.
