Summary:
In the article Considering implementation and use in the adoption of an LMS in online
blended learning environments, written by Erik Black, Dennis Back, Kara Dawson, Susan Jinks
and Meredith DiPietro, the topic of Learning Management Systems (LMS) is broken down and
analyzed for those who are interested in wanting to incorporate LMS into their educational
institution. The authors of the article provided the information on LMS in four sections. These
sections being, what is LMS, the other side of LMS, adoption and implementation of LMS, and
suggestions for how to best navigate LMS adoption and change.
Learning management systems are described and explained in simple forms and why it
is productive. Majority of the LMS being web-based to facilitate anytime, anywhere access to
learning, which is typically the biggest advantage of this system. The problem with LMS that is
discussed is the lack of tools that allow differentiation between LMS products because of all the
same features that are offered. This is where the idea of the other side of LMS is born from.
The other side of LMS elaborates of the importance of the attributes associated with a certain
LMS adoption, such as compatibility, relative advantage, trialability, complexity and
observability. All of these components make up a successful LMS adoption and implementation
process.
The article notes that the issues of LMS adoption and how to overcome the challenge of
implementation. They express that the software being used needs to be selected through the
five attributes they gave that make innovations successful in the adoption process of these
systems. The article concludes by suggesting to their readers that the best way to make
decisions regarding the learning management systems is to read and research them thoroughly,
and get a good idea of everything they have to offer compared to other systems available.
