 Il termine grunge ritenuto una deriva-
zione dellaggettivo grungy, nato attorno
al 1965 come slang di dirty or filthy (spor-
co, sudicio). Il grunge nato per ca-
talogare gruppi nettamente diversi dal
punto di vista musicale e che avevano
in comune la provenienza dalla citt di
Seattle. Non solamente un genere mu-
sicale, un movimento di cui fanno parte
le band della stessa citt, nello stesso pe-
riodo e uniti dalle stesse radici.

 Dallo scioglimento dei Green
River nel 1987, i componenti:
Stone Gossard, Bruce Fairwea-
ther e Jeff Ament, reclutarono il
cantante dei Malfunkshun, An-
drew Wood, e il batterista Greg
Gilmore. Dalla garage-punk di
Mark Arm fu aggiunto un toc-
co glam, dovuto a Andrew
Wood. Nonostante ci furono
di grande influenza nella sce-
na grunge, divennero famosi
Asvertising EP Shine, 1989 nei locali di Seattle e firmaro-
no, dopo poco, con la Poly-
gram pubblicando lEP Shine
(1989). Riuscirono a registrare
Apple, disco di esordio e nel 19
marzo 1990 il cantante Andrew
Wood muore di overdose di
eroina. Successivamente, Chris
Cornell, voce dei Soundgar-
den, collabora con gli ormai
ex-Mother Love Bone, si fanno
chiamare Temple of the dog
e incidono un disco che ricor-
der il cantante scomparso.

 I Temple of the Dog furono formati da Chris Cornell dopo la morte per overdose di eroi-

na, avvenuta nel 1990, del suo amico e compagno di stanza Andrew Wood, cantan-

te dei Mother Love Bone. Dopo questo evento, Cornell scrisse due canzoni, Say Hello 2 He-

aven e Reach Down, e contatt due degli ex componenti dei Mother Love Bone, Stone

Il gruppo fu completato dal batterista dei Soundgarden, Matt Cameron, e dal futuro chi-

tarrista dei Pearl Jam, Mike McCready. Iniziarono le prove delle canzoni e da queste pro-

ve nacquero nuove canzoni, cosicch dal preventivato singolo venne fuori un album, Tem-

ple of the Dog, pubblicato il 16 aprile 1991 dalla casa discografica A&M Records. Al gruppo

si un anche Eddie Vedder che partecip nel pezzo Hunger Strike in duetto con Cornell.
