1. SPOP 208 Degreasing Of Parts By Solvent Wiping

NOTE: Refer to 702000, General01 for additional


requirements.

R NOTE: Methanol or halogenated hydrocarbon solvents are not


R permitted in SPOP 208.

A. Procedure

WARNING: REFER TO THE MANUFACTURER'S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA


SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIAL'S INFORMATION SUCH
AS: HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL
CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY,
HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING,
USE AND CONTROL MEASURES.

R (1) Degrease titanium or nontitanium parts by solvent


R wiping.

R WARNING: THE SOLVENTS IN THIS PROCEDURE ARE


FLAMMABLE.

R CAUTION: DO NOT PUT PART ASSEMBLIES THAT CONTAIN


R NONMETALLIC MATERIALS FULLY IN
R SOLVENTS.

R CAUTION: DO NOT DIP (PUT MOMENTARILY) THE WIPING


R CLOTH IN THE SOLVENT CONTAINER; THIS
R CAN CAUSE CONTAMINATION OF THE SOLVENT,
R WHICH CAN CAUSE CONTAMINATION OF THE
R PART SURFACES AND PREVENT A GOOD BOND
R WITH ADHESIVES OR PAINTS.

R CAUTION: SIZED CHEESECLOTH CONTAINS RESIN BINDERS


R THAT CAN DISSOLVE IN SOLVENTS AND CAUSE
R CONTAMINATION OF BOND SURFACES AND
R PREVENT A GOOD ADHESIVE BOND.

R (a) Wipe the part with clean, white, lintfree,


R unsized cheesecloth (GA 1002) that is wet with
R one of these applicable solvents:

R NOTE: To keep the wiping solvent clean, pour the


R solvent onto the wiping cloth. Do not
R put the wiping cloth into the solvent
container. The cloth must be clean,
lintfree, plasticfree, white cotton.

NOTE: Wear clean cotton gloves to touch clean


R parts before adhesive bonding.

R to degrease nonmetallic parts for general wipe
R cleaning, or before painting or adhesive
R bonding.

R (b) Air dry the parts.

R NOTE: Do not use compressed air to dry parts


R before adhesive bonding or painting;
R compressed air can contain oil vapors.
