Chapter 1 W Kuntjoro

Introduction
Basic Concepts
An analysis tool to predict the responses of certain
engineering systems
Originally FE was developed for structural stress
analysis
Wide spread application: Structural Analysis,
Dynamic Analysis, Heat Transfer, Magnetic Field,
etc.
Based on discretization of Continuum

Introduction
History
The Finite Element method as known today has been presented in 1956 by Turner,
Clough, martin, and Topp. This paper presents the application of simple Finite Element
(pin-jointed bar and triangular plate with inplane loads) for the analysis of aircraft
structures and is considered as one of the key contribution in the development of the
finite element method.

Zienkiewicz and Cheung, 1965, reported the Finite Element application to all field
problems that can be formulated into variational form.

Przemieniecki, 1968, wrote a book on the Finite Element method as applied to the
solution of stress analysis problems.

Gallagher et.al., 1975, reported the development of Finite Element application in Fluid
Mechanics - Methods of Weighted Residuals.
