CHAPTER 1

Introduction

History of the Radio Station 90.7 Love Radio

Radio. A personal medium. A local medium. Messages broadcast over the radio are

directed personally to each individual listener. Its intense level of connection with the audience is

such that for many years now, the first medium that an individual tunes in to every morning is

radio. Also it can be said that it’s the last broadcast medium that an individual tunes before he

goes to bed. This creates an emotional bond between the individual listener and the broadcast.

Such emotional bond can be tapped for purposes of persuasion, as applied for instance, in radio

advertising. Radio is a local medium, it broadcasts messages that significantly concern its target

audience. It encourages and sometimes and requires sometimes the participation of the listeners

living with a certain locality. It is not an a intrusive medium, as it allows the listener to do other

things such as household chores among other things, without getting in the way.

Love Radio was previously known by its call letters DZMB when it began broadcasts on

the FM band in 1973 from its first broadcast days on the AM band. Back then, it played

mainstream pop, later gravitating to easy listening music. As DZMB, it also introduced and

institutionalized the deep-voiced radio announcer Dante Luzon, which later became its station

manager up to the time that the station reformatted to this present programming.
DZMB, branded as 90.7 Love Radio, is the flagship FM station of Manila Broadcasting

Company in the Philippines. The station's studio is located at Star City, CCP Complex, Pasay

City, Love Radio is the First radio to have Contemporary Hit Radio format before the birth of

99.5RT.Love Radio is currently #1 in the FM radio ratings for six years (since 2003), according

to Radio Research Council. The first airdate of the radio station is in the year 1964 where they

are still an AM radio station. The Love Radio became popular from their slogan, “Kailangan pa

bang i-memorize yan.” Back then, it played mainstream pop, later gravitating to easy listening

music. As DZMB, it also introduced and institutionalized the deep-voiced radio announcers.

Statement of the Problem

90. 7 Love Radio is a radio station in the Philippines which has a variety of programs and

one of these is the Tambalang Nicolehiyala and Chris Tsuper. It is a show in which the host

gives advices and informations to the audiences. They used to accept or read e-mails and letters

from the listeners. Tambalang Nicolehiyala and Chris Tsuper is a talk show in radio it tackles the

different problems of the people and seeks for advice to the host. The words being used in the

radio program is very dangerous because the radio station is for masses. It only means that

different kinds of people and different ages are listening in the said program.

• which influence or impact the radio stations have at local and national level
• how well the stations know their audience

• which relationships they maintain with other sectors of society

Significance of the study

Once the effects of present-day programming have been determined and proven by this

study, we can now evaluate them if they are detrimental or beneficiary to society. Necessary

planning and action may then be carried out to benefit the listeners. Proper testing to formulate

the ideal radio programs, ones that can exert the greatest influence on a large scale, will be

performed. Programming may be transformed to one that is fresh and unorthodox, constructive

to our culture and can lead to our progress. The study will also urge the industry to strengthen or

even transform the existing regulatory body into something which can practice total governance

over the media. Monitoring and regular evaluation of aired content will be done to see if it meets

programming guidelines set by the body. When this is all done, a developmental approach of

radio operation may be instituted to facilitate a supplemental form of education for Filipinos. It is

only proper to let the people have their say on what they want to hear in the airwaves. The

listeners should be treated with respect and with utmost importance. After all, audiences, the

most usually silent other end of this communication is the lifeline of the broadcast industry.

Without them, not a single form of media, no matter how well structured and planned they are,

would thrive. This is the biggest benefit the society can only wish for due of the state of present-

day radio programming.

In general, the collaborators of the radio stations are convinced that they know their

audience and their realities, because “our audience are people like ourselves”. This means, that

the knowledge of the social reality and the audience is experiential and intuitive. Perhaps, this

concept is valid in the case of the small community stations, where in fact the station is part of

the community. However the regional radio stations as well as the urban stations face a

completely different situation. Normally the popular radio stations don’t study their audience in a

systematic way.

One main characteristic of the popular radio stations has been the dialogue and

participation of the audience. Participation is a principal concept of those stations. The people

themselves shall become a subject of their own communication. So it is no surprise that all

interviewed radio stations regarded participation as an important part of their work. Nevertheless,

it is notable that the journalists don’t leave their studios and enter the villages as they did before.

The programmes produced by communities have diminished as well as the contributions by the

networks of community correspondents.

The journalists only go to the people to cover the news as all other radio stations also do,

abandoning little by little their former practice of developing radio programmes together with the

people according to their daily life.

Overview of the program in the radio station

Love Radio plays pop music Monday to Saturday. Quatro Cantos (Four Songs) is the

daily music countdown of Love Radio featuring four songs voted by listeners via SMS. Every

Sunday, Love Radio plays oldies. Aside from music, the station gives jokes from Kadyot Pinong

and Kukurukuku (Kuru-kuro ni Kukurukuku / Kukurukuku's Thoughts).

90.7 Love Radio’s City of license is Makati City . It’s Broadcast area is Metro Manila .

It has Slogans "Kailangan pa bang i-memorize 'yan?"(Tagalog for Do you have to memorize

that?), and "Bisyo na 'to!"(Tagalog for It's addictive!) . The Broadcasting Owner is Manila

Broadcasting Company. It’s Sister station is Yes! FM 101.1. From strictly slow songs, the

strong point of all Love Radio shows today has been its plain and simple grassroots

entertainment . The jocks are criticized from mostly educated listeners of higher income groups

for their cheap jokes, senseless banter, and even its absurd and green jock names.

A plus factor is the signal quality. DZMB's signal involves a quadraphonic (4 channel)

stereo sound that is heavy on the bass side of music, giving it an overwhelming presence. It's a

sure come-on even for radios of relatively weak quality, ensuring its popularity.

Most of the personalities/jocks' names are derived from common Filipino occupations

(e.g. driver, vendor). Here are such: Chris Tsuper – a cross-between "Christopher" and "tsuper",

a jeepney driver. He was previously known as "Carlo Valentino" of Love Radio Lucena, of what

is Chris's hometown in Lucena City. Nicole Hyala – lifted from "kolehiyala", a female college

student. Rica Hera - lifted from "cashier". Missy Hista - lifted from "masahista", a masseuse.

Rico Pañero – lifted from "compañero", a moniker used to describe an attorney. Kristine Dera -
lifted from "tindera", a vendress. Papa Jack – lifted from the "padyak" boys, a bicycle with a

sidecar. Pinong Lagari (Kadyot Pinong) – The character behind "Kadyot lang! Kadyot lang",

Cebuano for "Wait up!" which became one of the station's catchphrases. His story was recently

immortalized in the TV anthology Magpakailanman. Kukurukuku – The chipmunk-sounding

character who first popularized "Kailangan pa bang i-memorize 'yan!" (Does it have to be

memorized?)

Impacts of the program to the public

At first as we listen to this program 90.7 we will be entertain by their green jokes, it will

help the drivers not to be sleepy while driving and it will help us to bring out our stress. But as

we will critique that radio station in an ethical side it may have negative effects. Why? Because

not only those jeepney drivers and adults are listening to them there are also children who hear

their green jokes. With that children may think that it is ok to use that such kind of words like

“kadyo’t lang kadyo’t lang”. In our own experience when we are still in grade school we heard

already that line and as minors we are shocked our impression to that language is not good it

sounds like rude for us. We also questioned why those anchors are telling that in public.
CHAPTER 2

Body 1

A. How the program of Nicole Ayala and Chris Tsuper affect the people’s life?

90.7 Love Radio has kept its ranking as the over-all #1 radio station, according to surveys

conducted by both the Radio Research Council and AGB Nielsen. Amid the stiff competition

among FM stations, it certainly is no mean feat, as DZMB (the station’s original call sign) has

been topping the charts for six years running, currently taking in a full 20% of the total audience

share and leading its closest rivals by an extremely vast margin at that.

With the onset of 2009, the radio operations team at Manila Broadcasting Company (the

top-rating station’s home base) has come up with bigger plans to ensure that Love Radio remains

a step ahead. The station implements its new jingle package in time for its 34th anniversary last

Valentine’s Day.
Tambalang Balasubas at Balahura, the network’s top-rating morning program featuring

Nicole Hyala and Chris Tsuper, is already heard nationwide on all Love Radio stations. The

dynamic duo’s rough laughter and spontaneously witty repartees provide a welcome relief to

tuned-in radio listeners on traffic-congested roads. Nicole and Chris are also set to release their

much-awaited second music outing “Hey, Tambalan Na – The Mas Nakakalurkei Album” under

Ivory Records, guaranteeing a full-fledged promotional tour all over the country.

The segment “Tambalang Balasubas at Balahura” of 90.7 Love Radio is one of the highly

anticipated radio programs of today’s generation. People love to listen to their talks and

conversations, aside from good personality and voice that reflects to the kind of being they are.

The disc jockeys of the program uses language that most of the people adopted to use. Gay lingo

is one of the famous languages they use on the program; even in giving advice they use it. They

love to use this language because it is fun though sometimes some people don’t understand what

they are saying because they don’t know the meaning of a certain word.

Gay lingo is the common tongue gays speak. This is their code, an expression of their

thoughts and a way of conversation. This is what sets their sociality apart from the realms of

non-homosexuals. It is a combination of different formal languages, celebrity names, etc. But the

not-so-secret Gay Lingo actually is not new. It was already used since 1970s but it is only now

that it had grown to a more sophisticated level of interaction. Adapted and practiced by

homosexuals, it has transformed basic tagalong into a complex and colorful gossiping technique.

The language only heard in parlors, streets, gay bars, among others, could now be heard almost

everywhere as a part of expression of one’s feelings.

Everyone can use it and joke it to any person. The language or gay lingo is no use for

funny things or for making people laugh. It is a very effective media to express one’s thought in

a funny way. But its use may be different in the way it will be said.

B. Do their program show manners and use right words in communicating and giving

information to the public?

In radio broadcast many people or different kinds of people hear or tuned that’s why

language or the usage of language in radio broadcast is very important so that people will

understand what message the dj or jocks wants to give. Using the language is not bad but

sometimes people tend to become informal to adopt the language and use it in different

occasions. Now that the program is already heard nationwide there is a big possibility that a big

population of people will adopt this language and become one of the languages we are going to

use in our everyday routine in life. The program is very fun when you listen to it; the

entertainment is what they are going to bring to the listeners that make them feel comfortable.

The program does have a very big positive attitude towards listeners and that is one of the things

that make them number one of all the FM stations in the country.

According to the 1987 Constitution, Article XIV, Section 6 “The national language of the

Philippines is Filipino. As it evolves, it shall be further developed and enriched on the basis of

existing Philippine and other languages. Subject to provisions of law and as the Congress may

deem appropriate, the Government shall take steps to initiate and sustain the use of Filipino as a

medium of official communication and as language of instruction in the educational system”.

Being stated on the law, would it mean that gay lingo is a form of enriching the Filipino

language?

At one point, gay lingo becomes a free expression of one’s thoughts, something one

cannot convey through simple words and actions. Gay lingo becomes the bridge that connects

formality and arts. But somehow, doesn’t gay lingo also put the Filipino language and culture on

the line? Doesn’t the language speak of what a country or culture is made of? The answer may

only depend based on how each would interpret it. Whether it is something to be proud of or

something to be ashamed of, one thing is for sure, gay lingo is a part of the Philippine history

and culture. And somehow, although it may seem like a word for the gays, non-homosexuals

have come to make it as a part of their routines. But one question remains still, would using this

gay lingo mean that non-homosexuals are transforming their world to a new one where ones

gender becomes questionable?

The disc jockeys of the station doesn’t do anything wrong but it is criticize on how they

use the language as the medium of expression. It became a part of their everyday life to bring

advice together with the gay lingo and it will never be erased to them. People should also know

how to appreciate how things are used because not all things give us joy and laughter. Maybe

people think that the disc jockeys’ way of giving advices are not serious because they use gay

lingo but let us look on the other side that they are trying to be fun and make you laugh in spite

of the problems you are facing now.

Chapter 3

Body 2

Jocks Vs. Listeners

A.1. How do it affects the lifestyle of each as an individual.

The success of Nicole and Chris has turned them into big multi media idols. This is so

obvious with all the new “tambalan”-sounding DJs that have recently come out, imitating Nicole

and Chris’ own style and brand of humor but as their punch line goes, others may just try to

imitate but never will they have that kind of mix that the “tambalan” has.

A.2 how does they respond in this situation?

Having these “radio idols” with them candidly sharing their own real life/career

experiences and the ‘secret’ to their phenomenal success, it has become clear that innate, genuine

happiness can really take you places, even to massive fame and popularity. The two jocks are

really famous nowadays and even leave a trademark in people's mind. They still do their jobs

everyday, though they are now famous because of their "tambalan", to entertain the listeners is

still they main goal.

Media Vs. Public

B.1. Are the words that they use can serve as evidence without any notice to the victims?

In the words that they use it can serve evidence without any notice to the victims but it

doesn't mean that the language and words that they use in their program is unethical. It’s so easy

to relate and laugh with them as they entertain you with their out-of-this world punch lines,

hilarious but real stories and naturally naughty antics. Tuning in to Nicole and Chris’ morning
show is like listening to the vivid, peculiar sounds of our streets. As the quick-witted Nicole

tosses her multi-lingual lines straight from her rich gay vocabulary followed by Chris’ exciting

and lively greetings, it’s so evident why most of us have learned to love this “tambalan”.

B.2. Are the media in general aware that they can hurt the public’s emotions or

feelings?

It’s so evident why most of the listeners have learned to love the “tambalan”. No one

would get the feeling that they’re trying too hard just to build interesting topics every morning,

they never pretend to sound like someone they are not, they do not sound rehearsed and best,

they always fill the airwaves with their original brand of happiness. Who says all talk and no

music sounds boring? Now, there’s so much joy listening to a wacky but real love-at-first-text

story mixed with the rumbling yell and laughter of Nicole Ayala and Chris Tsuper.

This kind of admiration also goes for all their home-based listeners. How this fantastic

duo presented them to us is also how they entertain and affect their avid listeners every morning.

The listeners of this show knew what the program is all about and they should be ready for

everything that they will hear in the "tambalan." It may be to vocal, opinionated, vulgar, and

sometimes foul but if the listeners know what program they are tuning in, no public's emotion

will be hurt. On the other hand, it’s a free country, you can listen to any radio station, any music

that suits your taste. But that doesn’t free them from their responsibility to respect the

sensibilities of their listeners.

B.3. In the other hand, how does it help in spreading or giving information?

The station helps or aims to give information in a way that they use their sense of humor.

It is their way of giving information to their listeners. The way that the anchors give information

can be very effective because of their jokes their message can be remembered easily. But in

some ways there is also a disadvantage because there are children that should not hear their green

or mean jokes because it can pollute the innocent minds of youth.

Mass media can be effective way of giving information to people. The radio station is a

stereotype format. Radio programs can spread the latest news to the people and can give

information in a second.
CHAPTER 4

Conclusion

This paper is all about the Use of Right words and Manners in Love Radio 90.7

Tamabalan ng Isang Balasubas at ng Isang Balahura Nicolehyala and Chris Tsuper. It is to know

if they perform the right thing as a message giver. Our topic is all about how the jocks give

information or how they handle their language in spreading the message in the radio.

The proposed topic about tambalang balasubas at balahura is one of the most

sought after program in radio today. They describe it as fun and very entertaining program

having humorous disc jockeys that makes the people say that they are really the number one. The

study is conducted for us to know whether the uses of language by disc jockeys are appropriate

or not.

When we look at the state of radio, we find a medium that is stable though often

overlooked. The stability is a testament to the fact that each technology has its own enduring

strengths. In the case of radio, its resilience is traceable in part to the fact that listening to it has

become so much a part the daily routine of most Filipinos that it has faded into the background.

The radio is something that comes on when the bedside alarm goes off, when the car is started,

when you walk into the gym.

Because the program has been effective in delivering the program- related content, its

audiences are craving listening to their radio programs and interviews. Radio announcers or

jocks can touch the feelings of their listeners because of the advices they gave to their callers.

They can also make their audiences smile because of their sense of humor.

It is nice to know that radio announcers like Nicole Ayala and Chris Tsuper have a very

good sense of humor but sometimes they made stupid jokes. The things best thing they can do to

avoid using wrong words or malicious words is be sensitive enough in using such words,

research the radio station program and do reformatting if they know they will deliver wrong

words. And lastly, always determine if your message will fit to the listeners, because sometimes

young ones are listening to your program.

CHAPTER 5

Summary and Recommendations

In our policy paper we have discussed the right usage of words and the manners that the

jocks should use. The said radio station are using the wrong language because they want to

entertain. Everyone is aware on how people use some gay lingo’s it is one way of using words

for people to be more interested and entertained. It can also help in conveying messages and

through the good flow of the broadcasting station. The two jocks use other words in criticizing

because they want everything to be funny and for people to sty tuned to the station.

The study aims to clarify whether using inappropriate language like gay lingos can affect

people’s point of view in life. It is a great idea and a wonderful way to educate the public about

what we can do for them to have successful response. It sounded like a chance of a lifetime that

people wish we had.

In circles and cultures where music is in demand, disc jockey can be heard on the radio

and at any number of social gatherings, such as weddings, nightclubs, art openings, warehouse

parties, and high school dances. Some consider disc jockeying to be not a single action but rather

a series of actions that depend on situation and expectations. However, whether talk radio are

radio stations and programs which focus on holding some sort of public discussions. Such shows
always include an element of listener participation. Listeners contribute to talk radio by calling a

show's toll-free phone number, or in some. A shock jock is a slang term used to describe a type

of radio broadcaster (sometimes a disk jockey) who attracts attention using humor that a

significant portion of the listening audience may find offensive. The jockeys from Love Radio

are example of the shock jock; they are using their humors to attract people which are effective

today.

The media in the Philippines are often remarked upon as being the freest in Asia.

Conventional academic opinion in the Philippines attributes the country"s long tradition of

respect for free expression and a free press to the American colonial administration.

Radio, folllowed by television, has been the primary source of entertainment and

information among the people of the Philippines. Radio reaches 85.5% of the households while

television reaches 78.6%.

The radio broadcasting industry in the Philippines has gone through several changes

throughout it s nearly eight decades of history. From its fetal stages of pure entertainment, to its

adoption of its role as a tool for information in the late 40s,it has enjoyed a great deal of freedom

as a government control over it was at absolute zero.

Many people tune in to Tambalang Nicoleyala and Cris Tsuper because they want to

release whatever stress they have. The station has a humorous side in giving information. When
they give advices they tend to be mean but in the end they assure you that you will be a better

person if you did what they tell you. It is their way of showing and spreading the message. It is

very effective to many people when Nicole and Chris Tsuper use this. It is a form of discipline in

the radio industry. One of their ways in analyzing what the people or the listener should do to be

able to get over or move on in his/her problem in life.
