NEAR OVERHEAD STEEL TOWER LINES.

Col,

Below is an extract of TG blasting policy. In summary the limit we specify is PPV of 50mm/sec. Hope this is what you are
after.

Cheers
Steve

The limits for transmission lines is based on the observation that (generally) transmission
lattice towers are very resistant to vibration damage Therefore: PPV below 25mm/sec: no
interest. Between 25 and 50mm/sec: we would like to see some evidence (from monitoring) that
50mm/sec will not be exceeded. Between 50 and 100mm/sec. Probably OK, but requires some
investigation and review (eg monitoring). Above 100mm/sec: Only in exceptional
circumstances. It is assumed precautions will be taken to avoid fly rock and dust becoming
an problem.

We suspect that substations are far more prone to damage from strong vibration and that the
limits for building damage in the relevant Australian Standard should be applied.

Subject: UNITED COLLIERY PROJECT-CLIENT REQUEST ON BLASTING PROCEDIURES NEAR OVERHEAD STEEL TOWER
LINES.

Steve,

I have received a request from an Xstrata Client located in the Hunter Valley who has asked for and I quote:

Transgrid standard design guidelines which will outline blasting restrictions etc, which need to be taken into account
when mining adjacent to their infrastructure

The line in question is Feeder 81 a steel tower 330kV transmission line that is being planned to be relocated around the
extensions to the existing Xstrata United Colliery near the Gold Highway.

Is there anything in this area that you have available that can be provided to the client.

I did discuss issues such as particle velocity limits (footings) and appropriate safety procedures (blast mats etc) however
he is wanting to obtain some broad brush TransGrid guidelines or constraints.

Is there anything in this area that you can provide to assist the client?

Hear from you soon.
