CHAPTER I

1.1 Background of the study

Reading is one of the primary basic components of English Lesson. According to Donald

J. Leu, Jr, is that Reading ability is important. It is a key factor in ones job opportunities and

quality of life. Reading ability is a social, political, and economic issue in our society. The

reading course is very necessary in an educational case because everybody needs to be able to

read the text or handwriting properly. A good reading quality does not apply only for common

people, but also for students. Students have a primary task to be able to read the text properly.

Therefore, they are required to study reading to improve their reading ability. This reading

course can be done in a formal education or a school. Sometimes, they can do it in all places

where there are a lot of text put in there.

Recently, there are many people who are still not able to read the text well. Then the past

people built a school to provide the students to study the reading course. According to Donald J.

Leu, Jr, In school, reading more than anything cuts across every subject area. Not being able to

read text books, do research in the library, or read the teachers notes on the blackboard directly

affects the quality and amount of a students learning.

By following the reading course in the school, the students are taught to read the general

text step by step. They are asked to do the procedure of how to read the text or article

appropriately. Those procedures are finding and memorizing vocabularies, understanding each

word on the text, practicing correct pronunciation of each word, etc. By implementing this

learning method, the students are aimed to have improved their reading skills. Even though the
learning method of reading has run over the years, there are many students who still face the

difficulty in learning the reading course.

The students difficulties in following the reading course are that most of them do not

understand the meaning of a few words in the text. Moreover, they are also easy to get bored to

read a reading material given by teacher. Not understanding the meaning of the words makes the

students cannot comprehend the purpose of the whole text. In addition, being easy to get bored in

reading the text makes them cannot follow the lesson well. Therefore, the teacher is supposed to

help them in this case.

In order to make the students understand the words or vocabularies in the text, the teacher

asks them to do the following activities. First is that the students are asked to use their

dictionaries. Second, they take note for some difficult words. Third, they find the meaning of

difficult words using their dictionaries. By finding the meaning of those words, they later need to

memorize it. Finally, they can comprehend what the content of the text tells about.

The second problem of doing the reading activity is that the students are easy to get bored

to read the text given by teacher. The teacher is supposed to give them a very interesting type of

text to solve their boredom. The type of text should have the big size of font and feature the

picture. By having big size of font, the students can read clearly what the word is. Meanwhile, by

featuring the picture, the students can understand what the purpose of the text is.

1.2 Identification of the Problems

The problem that is often faced by the students in following the reading course is that

they cannot understand the meaning of most of the words and easy to get bored to read the type

of text. The difficulty in comprehending the text and being easy to get bored to read it are caused
by some factors. Those are that they do not know so much vocabularies and the grammar of the

text is quite difficult. Students are easy to get bored because the type of the text given by teacher

is not interesting.

1.3 Formulation of the Study

1. What are students problems in doing the reading activities?

2. What is the teacher solution to solve the students problem in reading activity?

1.4 Objective of the Study

The purpose of this study is to analyze the problem of the students in doing the reading

activities in the classroom. Those problems are that they do not understand the meaning most of

the words in the text and being easy to get bored in following the reading course. The researcher

then will include the solution of those problems. The first solution is that the students should

make a list of difficult words and then find the meaning of them. The second is that the teacher

provides the text features the pictures. Those solutions can make the students better in doing the

reading course.
