GENERAL GUIDELINES
THEME: Empowered By Innovation through ICT

CAL is committed to revolutionizing education. In keeping


with this promise, we continue to promote and support ICT in
the lives of our youth through the CAL Battle of ICT Wizards.
The theme for 2015 is Empowered by Innovation through
ICT. This year, CAL engages and updates our youth on the
many changes in ICT to align them with global trends in the
industry.

CATEGORIES:

Elementary

1. Elementary PowerPoint Using Microsoft PowerPoint,


the student is expected to create a presentation to show
the story of Three Little Pigs. Contestants must show
their skills in proper use of animations and transitions to
effectively tell a story using a PowerPoint presentation.
2. Elementary Excel Using Microsoft Excel, the student is
expected to create an Excel spreadsheet for grade
computation of 34 students from a class. In this activity,
each participant must be able to provide proper Excel
formulas needed in grade calculations.
3. Elementary Web Design Each contestant will produce
a functional company website for CAL (Computer
Assisted Learning) that showcases all the products and
services of the company. Contestants should also
consider how to promote the site globally in accordance
with the correct standards used worldwide.
4. Elementary ICT Quiz Bee To test the comprehensive
knowledge of elementary students in ICT concepts.

High School

5. HS Applications Programming Contestants will act as a


programmers and they are to develop a simple
Employee Salary Calculator. They may choose from 3
different programming languages listed in the
Application Programming general specifications.
6. HS Advanced Web Design The contestant is required
to develop a simple company website for a computer
retailing center that provides different computer
hardware, storage devices and peripherals. They must
produce a website that will show all the products and
services of the company.
7. HS Brochure Design using Adobe Photoshop Using
Adobe Photoshop, the students are required to create a
real brochure for a new kidzone storefront that will
emphasis empowering innovation through the use of
new technology through ICT.
8. HS CSS Competition Students are required to assemble
the components of one (1) dismantled PC unit. In the
Finals, they will also be required to prepare a 1-meter
peer-to-peer network cable and use this cable to
network 2 computers.
9. HS Movie Animation using Adobe Flash The student is
expected to create a DoItInTen 10 Seconds
competition wherein they need to produce a
presentation with all animation and techniques that
they learned in Adobe Flash.
10. HS ICT Quiz Bee Tests the comprehensive knowledge
of secondary students in ICT concepts.

Open Level

11. Digital Photography to test the capability of both


elementary and high school students on how to produce
great photos using an SLR camera.

PROCEDURES
1. The CAL 2015 Battle of the ICT Wizards is a nationwide
contest that is open to all public & private elementary
and high school students.
2. Participants for each category are selected/nominated
by the school:
a. One (1) participant for each skill related category,
including ICT Quiz Bee.
3. The school must accomplish the prescribed registration
form. The form may be submitted in 3 ways:
a. Scan the forms and email to inquiry@caleduc.com;
b. Fax the forms to 02-661-46-28; or
c. Submit to a CAL representative visiting the area.
4. Students who are dependents of CAL employees, its
subsidiaries, promo agencies, third party suppliers and
relatives up to the second degree of consanguinity are
disqualified from joining the contest. CAL will provide all
necessary files for the contest (references/photos, and
other information) to be used for the competition.
5. Bags, books, pens, notepads and gadgets such as mobile
phones should not be brought inside the contest room.
6. Contestants are prohibited from using the Internet to
download additional information during the contest proper.
7. Teams must be at the contest venue 30 minutes before the
scheduled time. Tardiness and absence are considered
grounds for disqualification.
8. In case of discrepancies, all appeals must be in written form
and submitted to the category head. Afterwards, the
category head will conduct the necessary investigation and
will make the appropriate decision. The decision of the
category head is final and irrevocable. No appeal will be
entertained an hour after the said category.

TIES

City Eliminations:
1. The three (3) highest scoring contestants from each leg of the
provincial eliminations shall proceed to compete at the
National Finals.
2. In the event of a tie in either the 1st and 2nd place, both players
will advance to the finals.

National Finals:
The three (3) highest scoring contestants from each category will
be declared as winners during the National Finals. In case of a tie,
a clincher round ensues immediately to determine the winner.

PRIZES:
City Eliminations:
1. Certificates of Participation will be given to all participants who
competed in the City Eliminations.
2. The top three (3) winners from every category will be awarded
medals. The 4th and 5th placers will receive Certificates of
Recognition. All winners will be informed of additional details
pertaining to the National Finals by way of e-mail or a phone
call.

National Finals:
Certificates of participation are awarded to those who make it to the
finals. The top three (3) highest scorers of each category will receive a
trophy and be recognized as the first place, second place and third
place winners, respectively.

Elementary:
Microsoft PowerPoint
Theme: Microsoft Office PowerPoint Digital Story Boarding

Create a PowerPoint presentation to show the story of Three Little Pigs.


Contestants must show their skills in proper use of animations and
transitions to effectively tell a story using a PowerPoint presentation. All
images are already available for the contestants.

General Specifications:

1. The information collected and presented in the entire


presentation should be based on the prescribed theme above.
2. The story script, images and other materials to be used are all
provided.
3. The presentation should have at least 10 slides.

a. Allocate the first slide on the title


b. Allocate the last slide to tell the moral of the story
4. Contestants can use any design templates and layouts they prefer.
5. Proper usage of animation will be observed. These may be applied
to text, pictures, autoshapes, and other embedded objects.
6. Applying transition between each slide of the presentation is
optional.
7. Contestants may use sound clips to enhance their presentations.
8. The slideshow should have a rehearsed timing for automatic
navigation.

Time Limit:

One (1.0) hour. Timer starts and stops at the signal of the contest

Elementary:
Microsoft Excel
Theme: Students Grade Spreadsheet

The goal is to create an Excel spreadsheet for grade computation of 34


students from a class. In this activity, each participant must be able to
provide proper Excel formulas needed in grade calculations.

General Specifications:

1. Only the list of students will be given as Input. The participant will
design the layout of the grading sheet.
2. The grading sheet consists of:
a. 4 Quizzes (30 perfect score each)
b. 2 Homework activities (100 perfect score)
c. 1 Project (100 Perfect Score)
d. 1 Participation Grade (100 Perfect Score)
e. 1 Quarter Exam (70 Perfect Score)
3. Total Grade (3 decimal places)
4. Final Grade (rounded to the nearest whole number)
5. Remarks (Passed/Failed) using conditional statement
6. Ranking: top 10 students must be highlighted using conditional
formatting.
7. On the second worksheet, there should be a report showing how
many students have passing grades and how many have failing
grades, and a Pie Chart showing the percentage of passing
students and the failing students.
8. The workbook is graded by the contest coordinator based on the
score sheet and the top 3.
9. One hour time limit is given; timer starts and stops at the signal of
the contest coordinator.

Elementary:
Basic Web Design
Theme: CAL Global Company Website

Each contestant will produce a functional company website for CAL


(Computer Assisted Learning) that showcases all the products and
services of the company. Contestants should also consider how to
promote the site globally in accordance with the correct standards used
worldwide. The students will use Notepad/Notepad++ for coding.

General Specifications:

1. Use a valid HTML/HTML5 or xHTML document for content. Using


web standards will ensure that all browsers will display your
website properly, without time-consuming rewrites.
2. Use cascading style sheets (CSS/CSS3) for the layout and design of
the website.
3. The website must consist of at least five (5) pages. Include the
following major links (Contestants can layout the links in a way
that will enable the site to be more appealing and user friendly).

e. Contact Us
4. Contestants will be using the same set of images, videos and
articles for the entire site.
5. Adding a hover effect in the navigation menu is a plus point.
6. Make sure to link your pages correctly.

Additional Technical Features:

1. Contestants can use any JavaScript code function that they are
familiar with as long as it will give additional features on the
website.
2. Create a Guestbook so that visitors can directly write their
comments on the website. Possible fields for the guestbook may
be:
a. Guest E-mail address
b. Full name
c. Contact Number
d. Message / Comment

3. The website should be browser friendly. Make sure it is


compatible with different browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Google
Chrome and Internet Explorer.

The Elementary Quiz Bee takes on the theme of Empowered by


Innovation through ICT wherein technology is used to enhance student
knowledge in different computer applications and software.

RULES

1. Each school is represented by one (1) student from any grade level.
2. Coaches are not allowed within the contest area during the
competition.
3. Students/Contestants will not be allowed to leave the contest area
once they are seated.
4. No bags, cellular phones, notepads, or books are allowed within the
contest area. Personal belongings of the students/contestants
should be given to their coaches/companions for safekeeping. CAL
representatives shall NOT look after these belongings.
5. Questions/comments regarding the Quiz Bee proper or participating
students/contestants will be addressed by CAL Competition Team.
6. The decision of the CAL Competition Team is final.

MECHANICS
1. The contest format is divided into three (3) levels:

3. Each student will be provided with a computer.

5. Questions are random so each PC will display different
questions.
6. Contestants will be given a ten (10) second time limit to
deliberate before they can move to the next question.
7. Official Quiz Bee proctors will go around the contest area to
check on how the students are doing.
8. Each level has different scoring:
a. Easy level: The scores of the Easy level will be carried over
to the next level.
b. Average level: The scores of the Average level will be
carried over to the next level.
c. Difficult level: The top three (3) scoring teams at the end of
this level will compete for rankings.
9. Points will be tallied at the end of the difficult level to
determine the top three (3) ranking teams.
10. Should a tie occur during the final round, the clincher round will
be used to determine the rankings.

Applications Programming using

Theme: Employee Salary Calculator

Contestants will act as programmers and will develop a simple Employee


Salary Calculator. The application will have a splash screen to display the
application title and other basic information. It must also have a login
form to prevent unauthorized access to the application. The main form of
the application is the calculation form wherein the user can calculate the
salary of an employee given some basic information. They may choose
from 3 different programming languages listed below together with the
IDE for the selected language.

The contestant is required to develop a simple company website for a

product on the website.
3. Use JavaScript/jQuery or any new technology client side program
to validate each field in the order form.
4. Show an alert message or dialog box to check the successful
submission of the Senders information after clicking the Submit
button.

High School:
Brochure Design using Photoshop
Theme: Kidzone Storefront Advertisement Brochure

Using Adobe Photoshop, the students are required to create an


advertising brochure for a new kidzone storefront that will emphasize
empowering innovation through the use of new technology through ICT.

General Specifications:

1. Students need to design their own kidzone logo using the available
fonts and effects on Adobe Photoshop
2. Photos and images will be provided to the contestants.
3. Final Image size: 8.5 inches by 11 inches
4. No minimum or maximum use of images.
5. Image resolution should be 72 pixels per inch.
6. Add text and slogans if you need to.
7. You are free to use as many Photoshop tricks and techniques as
you can.

Time Limit:
One (1.0) hour. Timer starts and stops upon the signal of the contest
organizer.

High School:
CSS Competition
Each student is required to assemble the components of one (1)
dismantled PC unit.

Rules:
1. Contestants must bring the following tools.
a. Philips Screwdriver
b. Crimping Tool
c. 1 meter Category5 UTP cable
d. 2pcs RJ45
e. Network Cable Tester
2. Each participant will be assigned to a committee member who will
serve as watcher.
3. The committee will be tasked to prepare all the necessary
materials before the competition.
4. Only two (2) RJ45 will be used, and the cable prepared by the
participant will be used to network 2 computers.
5. The committee will signal the start of the competition.
6. During the assembly, the committee may give a warning to the
participant during the installation of sensitive PC parts that may be
damaged when the PC unit is turned on.
7. After the assembly, the participant will proceed to network cable
preparation. Then he/she will use this cable to configure a peer-
to-peer network and perform a file and folder sharing between
the two computers.
8. The network adapter driver is already installed on the computers.
The computers to be used are running on Windows7.
9. Once the participant finishes all the requirements, he/she must
inform the watcher to have the actual time recorded.

10. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners are determined by the judges
assigned by the committee. In case of a tie, the competitors will
compete against each other in a tie-breaker round. The decision of
the board is final.
11. No coaches are allowed in the competition area.

Guidelines:
1. Proper Tools and Equipment Bring your own tools tools and
equipment are to be presented and checked by judges prior to the
start of the contest. Points will be deducted for every tool that is
not present.
2. Proper Handling of Components Handling and Organizing this
will be observed by the judge(s) and every gesture/action against
this criterion will be a point deduction.
3. Assembly of System Unit
a. Screw Assignment screws are mounted in their
respective sockets; a missed screw will be a point
deduction.
Drives should be fastened with four (4) screws
Casing should be closed with four (4) screws
b. Front Panel Assignments front panels are essential:
every part is a point but a non-working component will be
a point deduction

Movie Animation using Adobe Flash
Theme: Animations DoItInTen 10 Seconds competition

Students will apply their most creative talent by adding unique animation,
effects and storyboarding skills by making a 10-second Adobe Flash movie.
Each student must make sure that his/her movie will be worth playing and
that it demonstrates all animation techniques knowledge even just for a
10-second time duration.

General Specifications:

1. Create an audiovisual presentation using Flash based on the


theme Empowered by Innovation through ICT.
2. The final output must be in .SWF format.

Additional Technical Features:

1. The length of the presentation must not exceed (10) ten seconds.
2. Choose and add the appropriate background music for the
presentation.

3. Students need to create a storyboard beforehand to be able to


accomplish the task.
4. Tastefully incorporate as many Flash techniques as possible.
5. Contestants will be provided with the image, video and sound files
they will require to complete their presentation.
6. Students may use other graphic applications such as Paint or
Photoshop to edit an image.

Open Level:
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Theme: Inanimate Object Photo Contest

In learning photography, non-living or inanimate objects make great


subjects because they have infinite patience and do not move. You can
take your time getting your shot just right, checking the lighting, and
composing the perfect image.

These images of objects, table top products, still lifes are great examples
of what you can do with such subjects.

All Digital Photography contestants will gather in a room to be briefed


on all the rules and mechanics for the contest.

Rules:

1. The contestants will only pick (1) one best shot for the entire
duration of the competition. This shot will be submitted to the
organizers for judging.
2. Each contestant is required to bring his/her own SLR camera. (No
borrowing)

photo editor or software is prohibited.

1. Proper tools and equipment


Bring your own tools Contestant brings his/her own SLR camera.
2. Proper handling of components
Handling and Organizing this will be observed by the judge(s)
and every gesture/action against this criterion will be a point
deduction.

Time Limit:
Two (2) hours. Timer starts upon the signal of the contest coordinator.
After the time stops, the contestant must choose only (1) one shot that
will represent his or her overall work. All works will be displayed in a
High Resolution display laptop for judging.
