Editing Experimentation Analysis

I wanted to experiment with transitioning, and how video transitions can convey a different
atmosphere/feeling. I edit the same footage using just simple cuts, cross dissolve and fade to black
transitions. I wanted to do this to further my editing skills, but also my understanding of how certain
editing techniques can change the aesthetic and suggested meaning of music videos.

Simple cuts

The simple cut transition didnt convey the aesthetic I was hoping for, considering my chosen song,
genre and music video conventionally focus on the topic of depression, and the cut transition was
not conveying that topic. The cut transition didnt convey the narrative much, it gave a more rushed
aesthetic; this was not ideal. The cut didnt allow the visuals to flow, it gave the impression that each
shot was not connected; this video transition was not effective enough for my music video.

Cross Dissolve

The cross dissolve video transition delivered a better aesthetic than cutting. The dissolve created
the impression of a dream-like or hallucination, I thought that this was effective and I thought that it
could work well with my genre. The transition made it seem as though there was an elongated sense
of time, and it conveyed the suggestion that Tommys been in this situation for a long time. I thought
that the dissolve was very effective for my genre because it allowed the shots to flow, creating a
sequence that conveyed loneliness, which I found was important to maintain for my genre. This
transition style is very effective for my genre, therefore I will most likely be using this transition in
my final music video.

Fade to Black

The fade black is another transition that I thought worked well for my genre. The transition
implements an element of tension to the music video, as the tension progresses with each transition
used. I thought that it was effective because it intensified the visuals, overall creating an effective
sequence of shots; this worked well for my genre. The transition created the impression that each
shot was building up to something big at the end; I thought that this would be effective for scenes
that have dramatic intensity, however for the sample scene I used the use of tension was not
necessary.

Overall the two transitions I liked were the fade to black and cross dissolve. Each transition
implemented a different message, however both were effective for my genre. I would use the cross
dissolve edit more because it is more effective for my genre, and I would have more opportunity to
use it.
