LO1 PART B - Talk and music radio programmes

The radio station in which I have listened to is Absolute radio, the show in which I have then
analysed is The Jason Manford show played on sundays from 8-11am presented by Jason
Manford, due to playing at this time on a sunday morning there is clear idea already at what the
target audience is for this show alone being that of adults anyway the time of the show helps
signify this as not many people may listen to the radio in the morning especially that of a
younger demographic. The presenter uses his own salford/Manchester accent which helps
reach a larger audience especially those which are north, he does still uses terminology used all
around england in contrast to this which then helps to reach an even larger audience as people
all around england would be able to understand what is being said. Manford has an upbeat and
cheerful tone also to go with this which he has perhaps decided to use to help keep the
audience excited and cheerful on a sunday morning when they first wake up he has also done
this to reach a larger demographic through what he says and the language he uses and how he
says it with both serious and comedic terms and stories from how do you wear your poppy? to
stories such as being fined for singing too loudly in the car.The demographic for the show, is
therefore adults between 25 and 40 broadcasting in london and the west midlands this is shown
through the presenter himself being a young-middle aged comedian and the songs and stories
which are played and talked about throughout while also using and talking about stories which
would interest people more in this demographic and area then it would perhaps with young
teenagers in the north of england. When speaking and presenting his podcast Manford uses
very few but noticeable hesitated noises such as er or um throughout, this may be due to a
quick glances of what is coming up next or keeping an eye on the time or simply not knowing
straight away what to fully say when replying to a topic, this does however help to keep the
show loose and natural which helps keep the audience interested especially when having a
conversation with another as it feels like you to are to apart of the conversation. Manford also
uses a quite happy tone which increases in pitch when listing or talking about something
exciting or important. He does however also use sarcastic, sad and deep tones when talking
about something serious or upsetting which also helps to suade the audience in their emotions
also ever making the audience feel happy or excited about a certain topic or quite sad and
emotional about others.

The running order of the programme consists of indent - speech - music - indent - speech
reading texts listeners have sent in - music- indent - speech Commercials / news) - music -
indent - speech texts sent in - indent etc. The conventions of the radio station including indents,
texts in from listeners, music, speech topics, language used, commercials, news. These
determine the audience because they regularly play music that were classics between 10 and
25 years old, along with using commercials and news bulletins more interesting to young adults
such as different broadband and phone companies, the topics and texts used are both for and
from adults, the music played and speech which is being used throughout also helps keep the
audience intrigued as everything is separated so there is too much speech in one place and a
lack of music in another or vise versa the amount of indents throughout the show also help to
keep the audience informed about what station they are listening to and what show they are
listening to along with who the presenter is which also then keeps the audience interested as
they might prefer Manford to other presenters at the station. The speech to music radio is then
around 60 - 40, 60 being the music and 40 being the speech. This is because even though there
was a lot of speech when listening to the show with their being frequent advertisements and
news bulletins there is still quite a lot of music being played quite frequently throughout.
Throughout the 3 hour show the presenter himself, jason manford, speaks for at least an hour
and news and commercials playing for at least half an hour more with music being played for
the rest of the show all of which evenly distributed.

Throughout the running order the there are lots of speech points which contain different topics,
the topics which are then talked about throughout the show which i listened to were; 1 - Sunday
morning moan, 2 - Wasted Dreams - when your dreams don't live up to their expectations
and are just really dull, 3 - Jeffery Long's 86 Miles for charity, 4 - How do you wear your
