Pathogen Defense

Katrina Eager, Daniella Simari

Standards
AZ Common Core Science Standards:
S3.C3.PO2. Describe biotic (living) and abiotic (nonliving) factors that affect human populations.
S1.C4.PO4. Produce graphs the communicate data
AZ Anchor Standards:
Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words
Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others.
Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others' ideas
and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases by using context clues, analyzing meaningful
word parts, and consulting general and specialized reference materials, as appropriate.
ISTE-E
6b - Manage the use of technology and student learning strategies in digital platforms, virtual environments, hands-on makerspaces
or in the field.
6a - Foster a culture where students take ownership of their learning goals and outcomes in both independent and group settings.
ISTE-S
2.2b: Students engage in positive, safe, legal, and ethical behavior when using technology including social interactions online or
when using networked devices
5.5c: Students break problems into component parts, extract key information, and develop descriptive models to understand
complex systems or facilitate problem solving
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to discuss the types pathogen defenses that are within the
human body.
Students will be able to summarize the 3 lines of defense by creating an
advertisement for pathogen defense.
GOLDEN NUGGET: How can we keep our bodies healthy?
Think for a moment.
When was the last time you got sick?

What were you sick with?

How do you think you got sick?
Background
What is a pathogen?

Microorganism that can

cause disease
How do we keep the enemies out?
Think of your body as a castle with three lines of defense
First line of Defense
Mechanical Barrier: Physically blocks pathogens from entering the body
Skin and Mucous membranes
Mucous Membranes: Mucus traps the pathogens and send it back out
Sneezing, coughing, tears, urinating, vomiting remove the pathogen

The moat around the castle and the thick stone

wall
Second line of defense
Enemies have crossed the wall and random fire
begins: general destroyers

What is happening in your body?

Phagocytes: Type of white blood cell

Engulf the pathogen
Inflammation
Brings more white blood cells to the site of infection
Swelling, redness, heat, and pain
Fever
Inhibits bacterial growth and increases rate of repair
Third line of defense
T-cells and B-cells

B-cells
Battle between Antigen (intruder) and
Antibody (soldier)
T-cells
Release chemicals to bring in more white
blood cells= greater army/bring in your
secret army
Memory B-Cell and T-Cell
Body produce memory cells so next time
pathogen invades body produces specific
antibodies and chemicals to quickly
destroy pathogen
Make a PSA

pathogen defense works (5 pts)

Group 2 = Mucous Membranes

Group 3 = Fever

Group 4 = Phagocyte

On your sticky note write one take-away from the lesson and post it on the door as
you leave
