Alaska Standard: C. Concepts of Life Science A student should understand and be able
to apply the concepts, models, theories, facts, evidence, systems, and
processes of life science.
Hook:
1) Snack time/reading time: An Egg is Quiet
Introduction:
1) Today we are going start a really fun unit. This unit will take a couple weeks to
finish, but I am really excited to do this with you and I hope you get excited too!
a) What can you tell me about chicks?
b) What do they look like?
c) What kind of sounds do they make?
d) Where do they usually live?
e) What kinds of things do they do?
2) Promethean board will be displayed and students will already be at the computer
carpet to watch a short video on developing/hatching chicks:

4) Chicken Song -
a) Im a little chicken,
Ready to hatch,
Pecking at my shell,
Scratch, Scratch, Scratch.
When I crack it open, out Ill leap,
Fluff up my feathers and cheep, cheep, cheep!
Closure:
1) Students will meet back at the computer carpet and have a group discussion/sharing
on the following questions: What do eggs need to hatch?; What other animals
hatch from eggs?; What do you think came first? The chicken or the egg? How can
raising chickens be incorporated into your life style?
2) Students will put their How Does a Chick Grow worksheet in their folder/tub and
will be given their writing packet that will be worked on in the next lesson.
