search the librarys collection of scores, recordings and books
check which items you have borrowed and renew your items
reserve items that are out on loan to someone else
The catalogue (jlpa.trinitylaban.ac.uk) is available in the library on the
computers next to the entrance. It can also be accessed via Moodle and the
Jerwood Library website (www.trinitylaban.ac.uk/jerwoodlibrary). Students
have the opportunity to receive information skills training during their course.

OTHER SERVICES

on the machines); credit can be added online (moodle.trinitylaban.ac.uk > TL
links menu > Buy printing/photocopying credit) or at the library desk. Note

notices by the photocopier or ask a member of library staff for advice.

Binding and laminating

Binding and laminating can be carried out for you by library staff. The price is
advertised on Moodle and at the library desk. If you would like a number of
items bound, please give notice. If you ask us to bind material which appears
to be in copyright, we will ask you to provide evidence that permission to
make a copy has been given by the publisher/rights-holder. For more details
on binding please see the librarys Binding Policy on Moodle.

The Jerwood Library is a place of quiet study. To remain so, we ask you to
observe the following:
Please switch your mobile phone to silent (not vibrate) before
entering the library. Do not use your phone for calls in the library.
Please be quiet in the library; the South Library is a silent zone and
the North Library is for quiet study we dont expect people to be
talking above a whisper whilst at the North Library PCs, and voices
should be kept as quiet as possible if working collaboratively.
Please do not bring food or drink into the library, as these are
potentially harmful to stock and equipment.
If you borrow anything from the library, it is your responsibility to keep it in
good condition and return it by the due date. If an item is lost, its replacement
cost, including binding costs, will be charged to the user who borrowed it.

HOW TO USE THE JERWOOD LIBRARY CATALOGUE
The Jerwood Library catalogue is available online, via the PCs next to the
library entrance, the Librarys website (www.trinitylaban.ac.uk/jerwoodlibrary)
and on Moodle.
The catalogue contains details of most material in the library and e-books. Its
the most effective way of finding out whether we have an item and, if so,
where it is. To find LPs and special collection material ask at the library desk.
Video guides to using the catalogue are accessible from its home page.

GETTING STARTED
The catalogue search page contains a list of search boxes you can use one
or more. The table below explains how each of the search fields would work if
beethoven is entered.
Search everything Looks for the term beethoven anywhere in the record e.g.
finds music by Beethoven, books about him and CDs of
his works.
Author/Composer Finds records where beethoven is the author/composer of
a work.
Title Finds records where beethoven appears in the title of a
work e.g. the book Playing the Beethoven piano sonatas.
Subject Finds records where beethoven is the subject of the work
e.g. the book Some great composers.
Periodical title Finds records where beethoven appears in the title of a
journal e.g. Arietta: Journal of the Beethoven Piano
Society of Europe.
ISBN Finds books using an ISBN (unique ID) beethoven finds
nothing!

LIMITING YOUR SEARCH

This will cut down the number of results. The following options are available:
Type Find specific types of material e.g. books, music or CDs.
This is one of the most useful ways of limiting your search.
Location Find items within a particular location e.g. the reference or
short loan collection.
Manuscripts Choose to search for manuscripts only.
Language Find material in a particular language.

Visit Moodle (moodle.trinitylaban.ac.uk) for Library Links & course info. 5

Source Limit your search to specific collections within the Library.
Match on Specify whether your search terms should be retrieved as
keywords or exact matches.
Pubyear Limit your results to material published in a specific year or
year span, before a specified year or after a specified year.
Sort by Choose how your results are ordered, e.g. by author.

SEARCH RESULTS
The search results list contains brief information for each item, including if the
item is currently available and the shelfmark youll need to locate the item on
the shelves. An icon will indicate what type of item each record represents:

Book E-book Music CD Sheet music/ DVD Video CD-ROM LP record Journal
score

CONTINUE SEARCH IN
If the library does not have what you require, you can use the links in the
continue search in box on the right of the results list to continue your search
on other catalogues and online resources.
You can borrow from public music libraries, and may be eligible to visit and
borrow from academic libraries: visit the SCONUL Access website
(www.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access) for details. We can also borrow an item or
journal article from another library on your behalf (an inter-library loan/ILL)
on payment of a small fee per item. The ILL request form is available on
Moodle or at the issue desk.

CATALOGUE RECORDS
To see brief details of our copies of an item, click the title. Some book
records will include Google Book previews of their content.
To see more information about a title from the brief details page, click
on the full description link. Follow the links here to find other items that
share features with this item. For example, if Daniel Barenboim is a
performer, find his other recordings by clicking his name.
To share the item record with someone else or save a link to it for
later, click the Permalink button and copy the link.
To reserve the item if it is on loan, follow the Place hold link on the
left (log in required see My Account info below).
You can also follow a link to find items with the same shelfmark (and
therefore on the same subject or with the same instrumentation).
6 Visit Moodle (moodle.trinitylaban.ac.uk) for Library Links & course info.
SEARCH TIPS
Assume the library does have a copy of what youre looking for, then try
several searches to find it dont give up!
If you cant find something, ask and staff will check.
Keep searches simple, e.g. try just entering a keyword or two rather than a
full title. If you get too many results you can then narrow them down!
Enter people's surnames only or first name and surname, not initials.
To search for individual instruments or song titles use search everything.
Ask for help if you need to find pieces for a combination of instruments.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
These functions are mostly on the bar across the screen, near the top.

My Account
Check what you have on loan and renew items. Log in using your Trinity
Laban username and password (the same one as for Moodle).

Reading Lists
Versions of reading lists which show whether the titles are currently available
in the library, and allow you to reserve anything thats on loan (Place hold).

AN INTRODUCTION TO QUICKSEARCH
Access QuickSearch via Moodle (under Library Links).

WHAT IS QUICKSEARCH?
QuickSearch searches many of Trinity Laban libraries' electronic
subscriptions and recommended free online resources in one go along
with the Laban (dance) library catalogue.
QuickSearch does not search the Jerwood Library catalogue.
QuickSearch cant search all the libraries' databases (see pp.9-11), and
doesnt have the advanced search capabilities of individual databases.

WHAT IS IT USEFUL FOR?

Locating online recordings and scores from Naxos/Alexander Street.
Quick assignment research convenient as you can read the full text
online. For in-depth research, see Bibliographic Indexes on p.10.
Cross-disciplinary research good for anyone studying dance,
drama, psychology, education or physiology alongside music.

TIPS
Access an item by clicking the Get this item online link on the results page
below the item summary. Click the items title to see further details.
Use double quotes around search keywords to find that exact phrase.
On the results page, use the Source Types option on the left to view only
recordings, journal articles, magazine articles etc.
Click Show More under Refine your search on the results page for the
Discipline option: this lets you choose to search music databases only
(and/or other disciplines e.g. dance, psychology or drama).
The Content Provider option shows which databases your results came from
and lets you choose which databases to show results from.
You can add references to your temporary folder and then email, save,
export or print the list. If you set up a free EBSCO login you can save these
and your search history, otherwise it expires when you close the browser.
Most books and CDs listed in QuickSearch are in the Laban Library. Search
the Jerwood Library catalogue separately to find our books, music and CDs.

WHERE CAN I GET HELP?

Information skills training will form part of your course in the first year. For
further help contact the library, or look at the Jerwood Library pages on
Moodle (under Library Links) for library and online resource guides.
8 Visit Moodle (moodle.trinitylaban.ac.uk) for Library Links & course info.
ONLINE INFORMATION, SCORES, AUDIO & VIDEO
Many sources can be searched together using QuickSearch (in Moodle
Library Links menu). To access individual resources from home:
1. Go to Moodle and click the Online resources link in the Library Links
menu at the top of the page.
2. Follow the offsite link to the resource you require, and enter your normal
Trinity Laban login (available from IT) in the TL login box.

JERWOOD LIBRARY CODE OF CONDUCT
As part of your registration you sign to abide by the regulations of studying at
Trinity Laban, which includes abiding by the Jerwood Librarys Code of
Conduct.
The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to safeguard the common interests of
all library users and to enable the Library to carry out its functions as
efficiently as possible. Failure to comply with this code of conduct when using
the Jerwood Library may result in disciplinary proceedings, including
exclusion from the Library.

I will present my Trinity Laban resource card when borrowing or

renewing items, or at the request of Library staff.

I will treat all library materials with care. Essential marking to music
must be made lightly in soft pencil only and erased before the item is
returned.

I will return or renew all items on or before the due date.

If the Library recalls an item from me because it is required by another

user, I will return it by the date indicated on the recall notice.

I understand that I am responsible for all materials borrowed with my

resource card and am liable to pay the full replacement cost of any lost,
damaged or stolen items, including binding costs and a postage and
processing fee. If one part is lost from a set of parts (e.g. a string
quartet), I am liable to pay for the replacement of the complete set. I am
advised to ensure adequate cover on my personal insurance to cover
instances of theft.

I understand that unpaid fines or non-payment of invoices for the

replacement of lost items constitute a debt to Trinity Laban. I will not be
able to register onto the next year of my course or attend Presentation
Day if I am in debt to the Conservatoire.

I will switch my mobile phone to silent prior to entering the Library, and
will not make or take calls.

Visit Moodle (moodle.trinitylaban.ac.uk) for Library Links & course info. 13

I will maintain a silent environment in the designated silent zone and
keep noise to a minimum in the rest of the Library.

I will not consume food or drink in the Library, and any that I have about
my person will be kept within closed containers in a bag. Library staff
may ask anyone consuming food or drink to leave the Library, and may
remove food or drink found on desktops.

I will be responsible for the security of my own property, and will if

requested submit my belongings for inspection if the security alarm
sounds as I leave the Library.

I will observe copyright law in my use of Library resources.

I will treat Library staff and other library users with courtesy and respect.

I am responsible for the conduct of any guests I bring to the Library, and
ensuring it is in line with this code.
