Session 3 discusses Earth's geologic history of estimated 4.5 billion years. These
changes have caused life on earth, in the present era. Learning about the hydrologic
cycle teachers us not to interfere with if due considerations arent made when
engineering changes are implemented. Sometimes, such interventions could deplete
groundwater levels or may increase groundwater levels causing engineering issues. It
also discusses the Geologic Cycle, where changes occur at a very slow pace. The
session also discusses present day changes caused due to tectonic movements that
result from Earth's crustal plate movements. These movements cause changes in the
continental and oceanic crust.

The impact of such movements on Sri Lanka is discussed. Location of Sri Lanka on the
Indo-Australian plate helps determine the type tectonic hazards to expect, and what
engineering measures that would help overcome or mitigate damage.

Learners should be able to reflect/explain the 'stories' told by figures and tables in this
session, and they are not to be memorised.

Learners are encouraged to post their queries by adding a thread to this post.
