The Peoples
Princess
Lady Diana Spencer grew up as a shy young girl in
the quiet English countryside, yet in her 36 years she
found a way into the hearts of millions of people from
across the globe. As a graceful princess, a devoted
mother and a champion of various worthy causes
she became and remains one of the most adored and
recognised public gures of modern times.
Press photographers followed Diana day and night as speculation mounted that she and
Charles, Prince of Wales, were romantically involved. Here she is seen smiling having
stalled her new car a Mini Metro in front of the cameras as she left her apartment for
work on the morning of November 17, 1980.
On July 27, Charles and Diana are seen leaving St Pauls Cathedral after their wedding rehearsal. Following just behind are Prince
Andrew and Prince Edward.

Britons young and old wake from a night in sleeping bags on the morning of Tuesday, July 28. Some of these
people had arrived two days before the wedding to secure a vantage point outside St Pauls Cathedral.
The build-up
Despite the relatively short engagement, the excitement and anticipation that built for the wedding
of Charles and Diana was on a scale never before seen for such an event. Wednesday, July 29, was the
chosen date, and it was designated as a public holiday in Great Britain which would allow thousands to
descend on London and millions more to watch at home

They say its the brides prerogative to be late, but Lady Diana arrived at St Pauls with her father almost perfectly on time for the
scheduled 11.20am ceremony. Her dress, valued at 9000, was made of ivory silk taffeta decorated with lace, hand embroidery,
sequins and some 10,000 pearls. Designed by Elizabeth and David Emanuel, it featured a 25ft-long detachable train. The veil was
ivory silk tulle spangled with thousands of tiny hand-embroidered mother-of-pearl sequins held in place by the Spencer family
diamond tiara. Two of Dianas bridesmaids, India Hicks and Sarah Armstrong-Jones, are following behind.
The ceremony
The wedding itself was full of all the pomp and pageantry that had been in evidence during the build-up,
and was led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie. Charles and Diana had selected St Pauls
over the more traditional Westminster Abbey because of its increased capacity; they needed it, with a
congregation of 3500 in place to witness them become the Prince and Princess of Wales

While Diana might have felt that the press attention she received would
lessen in the wake of her separation and subsequent divorce from the
Prince of Wales, it was in fact the opposite. The media was obsessed
with her, conveying her every move, and in the summer of 1997 the
coverage went into overdrive as speculation mounted that she was
romantically involved with Egyptian businessman Dodi Fayed son of
former Harrods owner Mohamed Al-Fayed. On August 21, 1997, reporters
and photographers followed Diana as she left her gym the princess
