DSC1007/DAO1704 Decision Analytics Using Spreadsheets

2017/18 Semester 1 NUS Business School

Team Project Assignment

Scope of the Project

Describe a business case problem that involves decision-making under uncertainty. The case could
be hypothetical but it should look realistic. Your description should be clear about the following:
What is the business problem in the case?
What are the decisions that have to be made and decision criteria?
Where are the sources of uncertainty? (That is, which are the random variables? For the
problem to be non-trivial such that a simulation analysis is necessary, there should be at
least two (2) random variables, which are not both normally distributed.)
What are your recommendations based on your analysis of the problem?

Use EXCEL to perform a simulation analysis of the problem. The following must be included:
EXCEL simulation model (MUST be able to perform sensitivity analysis on the worksheet)
Analysis of results from EXCEL simulation
Presentation of results using a histogram

Submission Requirement

Each team will submit

(a) a written report (in WORD) no more than 4 pages (excluding the cover page), and
(b) an EXCEL workbook.

Put your documents into a single ZIP file with the following file name format:
Project_<Sectional Group>_<Team>
For example, for Team 10 of Sectional Group B2, the file name would be: Project_B2_T10.zip

Deadline

Upload your Team Project file onto IVLE by Sunday 5 Nov 2017 (Week 11) 1900 HRS.

Late submissions will be penalized in the same way as for team assignments. That is, if a Team
Project file is submitted late but within 24 hours of the deadline, a penalty of 25% of the full marks
will be imposed. However, if a Team Project is submitted later than 24 hours after the deadline, the
penalty imposed will be 100% of the full marks for Team Project. Incorrect submission (e.g.,
using the wrong filename format) will also be penalized 25% of the full marks.

Presentations
Oral Presentations on the Team Project will take place on Weeks 12 and 13. The sequence of
presentations will be determined by random ballot in class. Each team will be allocated 15 minutes
for presentation and 5 minutes for questions. Please ensure that every team member participates
in the presentation.

Grading
Under normal circumstances, all members of a team will be awarded the same mark for the Team Project
Report. However, if any particular team member has not contributed to the team effort in producing the
Team Project Report, then the other team members must bring this to the attention of their instructor so
that appropriate action can be taken. Each team member will be graded separately for their part in the
Oral Presentation.
