and past - are made heard.

As one moves through the site, the voices emerge:
the gently rustling leaves of the cottonwood trees,
the power of the churning river below, the subtle,
ephemeral narratives at Whispering Point, and the
animated dialogue around the fire. Each unique voice
is given a platform and space for expression and
exchange.

Soft, sloping meadows capture the ever present breeze

that passes over the site, giving voice to the landscape
underfoot. Trees too sign their chorus. Biologist David
George Haskell spent years studying the sounds of
trees:

Trembling aspen leaves shudder when the air moves

slowly, then spasm into pattering chaos in more
forceful gusts. A little calmer, drier, are the white birch COTTONWOOD TREMBLING ASPEN WHITE OAK LITTLE BLUESTEM (MEADOW)
leaves that lift from tap to fizz as the wind picks up. Populus deltoides Populus tremuloides Quercus alba Schizachyrium scoparium
These deciduous trees almost smother the rustling,
chafing sounds of the fir. ...Gusts of wind sonify plant
diversity. Oaks voice is coarse-grained, throaty;
maples is sandy and light. These differences have
their origins in plant evolution and adaption. Drought-
resistant oak leaves are thicker, tougher than the
water-hungry maple. The different sounds of trees on
a dry mountain ridge and in a moist forested hollow
speak to the particularities of the ecology of each
place.
