Metasynthesis of the Views about Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa

in Adolescents: Perspectives of Adolescents, Parents, and
Professionals

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY:

This study sought to perform a systematic review of qualitative

studies to synthesize the views of adolescents with Anorexia
Nervosa, their parents, and their healthcare providers about its
treatment.

METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY:

This study performed a thematic synthesis to develop the central

themes that summarize all of the topics raised in the articles
included in our review. The quality of the articles was assessed
by the Critical Appraisal Skills Program.

FINDINGS OF THE STUDY:

This study included 32 articles from seven different countries.

Two central themes were inductively developed from the analysis:
(1) the treatment targets (i.e., symptoms and patients in
context), and (2) a therapeutic toola relationship,
specifically the core concept of the therapeutic relationship.
The results underline the difficulty in establishing a
therapeutic alliance, the barriers to it, especially the risk
that professionals, adolescents, and parents will not converse
about treatment; although such a dialogue appears to be an
essential component in the construction of a therapeutic

alliance.
1. This article taught me how important self-image is. How an
individual should practice to have a positive view
especially in terms of physical appearance. How one should
not be easily influenced and conform to a certain size that
is set by society, because a persons worth and beauty is
not defined by its weight or what he/she looks on the
outside.
2. The study and its findings gave a clear idea of what are
the perspectives of adolescents who have Anorexia Nervosa,
parents and professionals when it comes to treatment. It
gives an impact to psychotherapy in general and in the
Philippines in a way that it gave awareness as well as
reasons why a person having Anorexia Nervosa may engage or
not engage to treatment.
3. Anorexia nervosa in adolescents can be a difficult-to-treat
disease. The study and its findings gives an impact to
potential clients in a way that it introduces them to
different therapeutic approaches that have been recognized
as effective treatments for adolescent.
4. The study and its findings gives an impact to counselor or
psychotherapist as a person in a way that it helps him/her
generate new insights about the issues around treatment of
adolescent that have Anorexia Nervosa that might have new
clinical implications that could improve the care process
of such disorder.
