Technical Training for Staff of PT SNA,


Ketapang, West Kalimantan
on
24th & 25th July 2017

1 Introduction

As part of the internal requirement of IOI/PT SNA and in line with the recommended actions by
RSPO CP, technical training on peat/ BMP on peatland management as well as Integrated ( SMART)
Patrol methodology was conducted in 2 days with the relevant management and staffs of SKS/
BNS/ BSS. The training was conducted on 24th and 25th July 2017 at SKS Mill. 35 staff who attended
the day 1 of the training on 24 July and 20 staffs attended the training on day 2 on 25 July. The
trainings were divided into 2 parts- classroom (theory) and followed by field demonstration.
Although officially the training was conducted for 2 days, but the training period actually longer
than 2 days as relevant staffs were continuously being trained during other field work conducted
during the mission of GEC to PT SNA ( between 19-28 July).

1.2 Recommendations
Peatland Management

a) Basic training has been provided on Peatland management but further hands-on

experience needed on peat issues for management and sustainability teams especially in

relation to water management and BMP implementation.

b) Water zoning and management plan linked to revised SOPs and allocation of resources are

needed to advance peatland management.

c) Further training is needed on monitoring and maintenance for peatland rehabilitation as

well as landscape management

SMART Patrols

a) SMART Patrol teams should be established for BSS/KPAM and SKS/BNS

b) PT SNA should appoint an M&E/database officer to compile information and data related to

Monitoring and evaluation of progress for management purposes.

c) Separate teams/ patrol methodology should be prepared for

a. fire prevention and monitoring;

b. Water level and flow monitoring

c. Wildlife, HCV and Conservation monitoring

d) PT SNA should purchase equipment for SMART patrols

e) Further SMART PATROL training should be undertaken (3-9 September 2017)

f) Implementation schedule for SMART Patrols should be set (September onwards)
