sodium)passthroughthecationexchangeresinwheretheyarechemicallyexchangedforhydrogenions.

Thewaterthenpassesthroughtheanionexchangeresinwheretheanions(i.e.chloride,sulphate,nitrateand
bicarbonate)arechemicallyexchangedforhydroxideions.

Thefinalwaterfromthisprocessconsistsessentiallyofhydrogenionsandhydroxideions,whichisthechemical
compositionofpurewater.
