Brief Introduction
As a large-capacity gateway device of carrier class

supports interworking between different bearer networks
provides conversion function between different traffic flow
formats:
server as trunk gateway (TG);
Act As access gateway (AG) ;
support embedded signalling gateway (SG).

Product Structure
UMG8900 can be divided into two parts: service switching

module and user access module.
Service switching module(SSM):
performs the traffic flow format processing and switching function. Act
as TG or as a switch in NGN.
User access module(UAM):

provides integrated access function for both narrowband and
broadband users act as AG.

Service Switching Module
Service switching module (SSM) of UMG8900 is consisted of 4 parts:

Main control frame
implements management and maintenance functions of the whole device and supports
service access and process simultaneously.
Service frame
provides service bearer process function.
Central switching frame

provides multi-frame cascading function when multi-frame cascading (3 frames).
Extended control frame

is configured when the device is in the maximum configuration. The extended frame
does not support access and process functions of bearer services, but provides
connection management and control function.

1.this subsystem performs media stream format
conversion and service bearer adaptation
2.This subsystem concerns VPU ( ECU).
VPU is responsible for voice transcoding and physical

boards is FVPB;
it is engaged in announcement playing, DTMF
generation and detection, digit collection, MFC,
audio mixing (conference) and FSK and has such
physical boards as FSRU.
ECU :
is echo cancellation board ,it is the pinch board of
VPU.

Introduction to Boards
The involved boards can be divided into seven categories according to
their functions:
Equipment and resource management unit (FOMU, FMPU , FCMF
and FCMB)
Service and protocol processing unit (FHRU and FSPF)
Switching and subtending unit (FNET, FTNU, TCLU, FFLU and
FBLU)
Interface board (FP1H, FG1O, FS2L, FS2E, FP4L, FE8T, FE32/FT32)
and backup interface board (FBGE, FBFE and FBAP)
Media resource processing board (FVPU, FECU)
Clock board and clock drive board (FCLK)
Subscriber access module (PV8, RSP, TSS, ASL, ESC, PWX and
HWC)
Software System
The software system is divided into two parts by their different

functions and applications: host software and LMT system.
The host software is further divided into lower-layer base
software, service application software and maintenance and
management software.
UMG8900 is managed and maintained by the BAM module in
a hard disk built in the UMG8900 host.

Signaling Adaptation
The embedded SG of UMG8900 supports the adaptation of

multiple types of CCS and CAS.
common channel signaling (CCS) as SS7, DSS1 and V5 are
adapted based on SIGTRAN protocol.
channel associated signaling (CAS) such as R2 and No.5
and R2 multi-national adaptation are supported.
UMG8900 achieves R2 adaptation mainly by means of H.248
extended packets.

Networking Applications
UMG8900 serves as TG or AG in NGN or as the traditional PSTN

switch and the next-generation switch:
1.In NGN, UMG8900 is applied in the gateway exchange and toll exchange as
large-capacity TG.
2.UMG8900 can provide next-generation TDM switch application.
3.UMG8900 can act as tandem exchange/toll office/gateway exchange/C5
networking application of PSTN .
4.Provides AG function of large capacity via RSP/PV8 user frame of UMG8900
accesses user directly.
