Standard 3.2.4. A4 Recognizing that combining two or more substances may make new
materials with different properties.

Learning Targets/Objectives:
Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the weeks materials by discussing
within their groups and answering a variety of questions in a jeopardy game.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1. Jeopardy 1. students can accurately answer questions
2. Heads down arms up provided in the jeopardy game
2. students will put their heads down and raise
their hand if they feel they are ready to take
the exam next week
Assessment Scale:
4 (advance): student gets questions correct without having to ask their team members
3 (proficient): student gets most questions correct without having to ask team members
2 (average): Student answers some questions independently and some with help from their
team members
1 (needs improvement): student answers few questions without the help of their team members

Subject Matter/Content: Physical and Chemical Changes Review

Prerequisites:
Understanding of the states of matter
Differentiating between physical and chemical changes
Strong understanding of unit vocabulary
Key Vocabulary:
Mass: the amount of matter in an object
Density: state or quality of how compact something is
Solubility: Capability of being dissolved or liquefied
2

Weight: the measurement of the pull of gravity on an object

Volume: the amount of space that matter takes up
Solid: have a defined shape and occupy a definite amount of space
Liquid: do not have a defined shape, but they do have a definite amount of space
Gas: do not have a defined shape or take up a definite amount of space
Temperature: is the measurement of how hot or cold something is
Conservation of Mass: a law that states matter is not created or destroyed
Boiling Point: the temperature at which a substance changes state from liquid to gas
Freezing Point: the temperature in which something changes state from liquid to solid
Melting Point: the temperature at which a substance changes state from solid to liquid
Evaporation: commonly used to describe something going from a liquid to a gas
Hydrophilic: dissolves in water
Hydrophobic: attaches to the fats in milk
Chemical Change: change in matter that produces a new substance with different
properties from the original
Chemical bonds: force that holds atoms together
Reactant: substance presented before a chemical change
Product: substance produced by a chemical change
Milk: mostly made up of water, but has the following things in it as well:
Vitamins: organic compounds that are needed in small amounts by the body for normal
growth and metabolism
Minerals: solid substances that occur naturally and is used by the body
Proteins: grow, maintain, and replace the tissues in our bodies
Fats: Provide energy that the body needs
Soda: carbonated water
Water: the basis of the fluids of living organisms

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
Yesterday I told you we would be playing jeopardy, has anyone seen or played je opardy
before?

Development/Teaching Approaches
Will start by answering any remaining questions from the inquiry the day prior
Students will review the rules to jeopardy
Students will be divided into four different groups
Students will play jeopardy with created PowerPoint
Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
Next class we will be taking our test, so make sure you write down any last-minute questions
for before the test
Accommodations/Differentiation:
For students who are blind or have a learning disability, make sure that the teacher reads the
questions allowed to give them equal access to the review.

Materials/Resources:

PowerPoint
Jeopardy
Jeopardy scorecard

Reflective Response:
Personal Reflection Questions
1. Did the lesson meet the time constraints?
2. How well did students respond to the attention grabber?
3. Did the transitions move as quickly as I thought they would?
