Arithmetic for all competitive exams

Right prism: a prism is a solid whose base is a rectangular
polygon and whose faces are rectangular

The vertical distance between the midpoints of the bases

of a prism is called height of the prism
The sum of areas of all rectangular faces is called lateral
surface area (L.S.A) or slant surface area (S.S.A)

Lateral surface rae = lateral surfacearea +2X base area

Volume of prism = area of base X height

Cylinder: cylinder is a prism whose base is a circle. So the

lateral surface will be a curved one. So lateral surface
area is called curved surface area

If r be the radius of the cylinder and h be its heighjt

then

Curved surface area (C.S.A) = circumference of base X

height = 2r X h = 2rh

total surface raea = C.S.A + 2X base area

= 2rh +2r2

= 2r (r+h)

Volume = base area X height

= r2 X h = r2h

Important tip: while calculating the percentage changes

in lateral surface area, total surface area and volume of
prism the constant term and any neumeral in the
formula can be neglected.

Eg: C.S.A of a cylinder can be taken as rh instead of 2,

T.S.A can be taken as rh instead as r(r+h) instead of
2(r+h) and volume can be taken as r2h instead r2 h
