1. (Holzapfel ex. 1 p. 38)
Let the covariant basis vectors g1 , g2 and vector u be given by
1
g1 = e1 , g2 = (e1 + e2 ), u = g1 + 2g2 ,
2
where {e }, = 1, 2 is a set of orthonormal basis vectors.
Compute the contravariant basis vectors and express u using the contravariant basis.
Draw picture and interpret the geometrical situation.
2. (Holzapfel ex. 6 p. 39)
Let an orthogonal tensor Q be represented by

Q = Qij gi gj = Qj i
i g gj .

(a) Use the dention of the transpose v AT u = uAv = Av u to verify that

QT = Qij gj gi = Qij gj gi and show that the ortogonality condition QT Q =
QQT = I may be written as

Qk i i
j Qk = j , gkl Qk k
i Qj = gij .

(b) Show that under the transformation gi = Qgi , gi = QT gi , i = 1, 2, 3 the

components of the Euclidean metric tensor I remain unchanged.
3. (Holzapfel ex.2 p. 43)
Suppose that the tensor A(t) is invertible. Prove the important relation

det A(t) = det A(t)tr[A1 (t)A(t)] = det A(t)AT : A(t).

The superimposed dot denotes time derivative. Check the result with the matrix
representation of the tensor given by

1/2 0 0
[A(t)] = t 1 0 ,
0 0 2

where is a scalar.
4. Compute the contravariant components of the metric tensor g mn in cylindrical coor-
dinate system.
