Recall- I
Various tools are used to monitor resources and
performance of a computer as well as the problems
encountered in the resources.
It also deals with baselines and logs and various
performance settings. System Information can also
provided by using WMI scripts.
System Configuration Tool helps in troubleshooting
the startup process and modifies which program run
at startup, editing configuration files, and enables you
to control Windows services and access Windows
Performance and Troubleshooting tool.

With the help of Event Viewer you can view event
logs whereas task manager help to close the
applications which are not closed by normal process.
Windows Performance Toolkit contains performance
analysis tool that are new to the Windows SDK for
Windows 7

Backup and Restore console - I
Backup is the activity of copying files so that they are
preserved in the case of equipment failure. The files
backup and restore features in Windows help you to
keep data safe from user error, hardware failure, and
other problems

In Windows 7, Backup and Restore are configured


and scheduled by using Backup and Restore console
under System and Security tab in Control Panel

Backup and Restore console-II
System Image and Files and Folders are two types of
backups supported in Backup and Restore console

There are various backup destination available such


as an internal hard drive, an external hard drive,
DVD-ROM, USB flash drives, Network Locations,
VHD (Virtual Hard Disk)

System Image Backup - I
System Image takes block by block backup of your
system into a .vhd file

To create a System Image backup manually


whenever changes are made in the system
configurations, you can use Wbadmin command-line
utility.

To take a backup on drive d, enter the following


command:-
wbadmin start backup backuptarget:d: -
allCritical

System Image Backup - II
System Image backup also creates the following files:

A Media ID file in the folder to identify the disk image

GlobalCatalog and BackupGlobalCatalog files in the


Catalog folder to track the backup image versions

Extensible Markup Language (XML) files in the backup


folder that has configuration settings for the backup file

System Restore - I
In Windows 7, System Restore restores your files
and folder so that the computer works properly

Windows 7 creates system restore points on a


regular schedule and prior to events such as
installation of application and drivers

A restore points contains information about registry


settings and other system information

System Restore - II
To start the system restore:
You need to enter system restore in the Start menu
Search box and click the required link

In Control Panel, you can access All Control Panel


Items, click Recovery, and click Open System
Restore

System Protection
System protection helps in creating and saving
information about your computer system files and
settings

System protection is automatically switched on for


the drive that holds the operating system and can be
enabled only for drives that are formatted using
NTFS (New Technology File System) file system

Advanced Recovery Method
Advanced Recovery Method helps Windows to return
to usable state if it is badly damaged

Advanced Boot Options - I
Advanced boot options provide various repair
methods for system recovery, when the computer is
unable to recover data from its backup

In Windows 7, you can access the Advanced Boot


Options by restarting the computer and holding the
F8 key while it reboots

Advanced Boot Options - II
You can choose any of the following options:

Safe Mode: This loads minimal number of drivers

Safe Mode With Networking: This loads the least


numbers of drivers that will enable basic operation and
connectivity

Safe Mode With Command Prompt: This loads minimal


drivers and starts Windows 7 with a command-line
interface

Advanced Boot Options - III
Last known Good Configuration: This boots the
computer into the last configuration known to have
worked
Debugging Mode: This enables kernel debugging
and System Restore
Disable Driver Signal Enforcement: This allows
you to load unsigned drivers
Start Windows Normally: This process attempts to
start Windows 7 normally. If you booted from the
installation DVD- ROM, selecting this option starts
Setup and Windows 7 installation begins

System Recovery Options - I

The System Recovery Options contains several tools,


such as Startup Repair, that can help you recover
your operating system from a serious error

This set of tools is present on your computer's hard


disk and on the Windows installation disc

System Recovery Options - II
In System Recovery Options you have following
options:
Startup Repair: This automatically fixes the problem
that prevents Windows from starting. If previously there
was a problem of booting for the normal restart of
Windows 7, then it provides us the option of Startup
Repair

System Restore: System restore provides


another method of starting system restore to a
previous system restore point

System Recovery Options - III

System Image Recovery: Enable you to implement


a System Image Restore. If system changes are
causing problems, you can choose System Restore
Option

Windows Memory Diagnostic: This analyses


memory of the computer for hardware problems

Command Prompt: Gives access to the file system,


volumes, and files through a command line interface

Windows Boot Options
Windows 7 implements a boot loader, a boot
configuration and storage system called Binary
Configuration Data (BCD), and a boot option editing
tool called Bcdedit

The following are the boot loader features:


Windows Boot Manager (Bootmgr.exe)
Windows operating system loader (Winload.exe)
Windows resume loader (Winresume. exe)

Boot Configuration Data
In Windows 7, boot options and BCD are stored in
the BCD store. BCD provides common interface for
all computers running Windows 7
BCD is available at run time and during all phases of
setup, including resuming after hibernation
You can use Bcdedit utility for troubleshooting and
debugging when BCD store must be restored while
running Startup Repair from DVD-ROM or remotely.

Rolling Back Driver
You can boot into Advanced Boot Options by using
F8 key, select Debugging mode and select repair
your computer. However, every time it is not
convenient to use System restore because the driver
could have been installed through Windows Update
with other important updates that you do not want to
roll back
Roll Back Driver option is used when you have to
restore the previous driver that was used before new
drive was installed

Restoring Corrupted or deleted
files by using previous Versions
Previous versions are backup of files and folders that
are created using the Backup And Restore console

This previous version of the file helps to restore


damaged files or deleted files

You can access these files and store them at


different locations

Restoring Files and Folders
You normally restore the files whenever the file is
deleted accidentally or corrupted but sometimes you
need to restore the file to different location to test the
backup and restore procedures and this is performed
without overwriting the files and folders

Restoring of files and folder is known as dummy


restore

In Windows 7, restoring files and folders is done from


backup

Shadow Copies
Shadow copies are saved automatically as a
part of the restore point

In Windows 7, if the system protection is


enabled, shadow copies are created

Shadow copies are not available for the


offline files and also for those files and folders
that are required for Windows7 to work

Configure System Protection and
Disk Usage-I
The following options are provided in Restore
Settings section of the system protection dialog box:

Restore System Settings And Previous versions Of


Files: This enables the creation of restore points that
holds system information to be used during a system
restore
Only restore Previous Versions Of Files: You
use this setting on disk drives that you use for file
storage and that do not contain system files such
as a second internal hard disk

Configure System Protection and
Disk Usage-II
Turn Off System Protection: You typically use this
setting on disk drives that are backup destinations.
You do not need to create previous versions of
backup files because backup files sets already
perform this function

In Windows 7, Backup and Restore are configured
and scheduled by using Backup and Restore console
under System and Security in Control Panel
System Image takes block by block backup of your
system to a .vhd file
When you create System Image Backup, Windows 7

the backup media
