Clear Learning Objective / COLOSO

Today I will read a short story and write about its features, so that I can analyze the text based on literary criticisms. I know I have
it when I can provide an analysis from all four literary criticism lenses.

Guided Questions/Prompting Stems:

How do text features help the reader develop an understanding of the characters?
What are the lenses with which we can analyze a text?
How do these lenses impact our interpretations?
Mentor Text:
The Lottery Ticket by Anton Chekhov
Connection/Hook:
Using the Nearpod platform, students will work collaboratively to read the guidelines for their Literary Criticism paper
Through Nearpod, they are prompted to highlight anything you think is important to remember. After the close
reading, students answer the open ended prompt: Summarize what you are expected to do in the essay in your own
words.

Students will then take a look at the rubric from which they will receive the score for their essays. They completed a
fill in the blank response in which they noted the point values associated with each category.

Anchor Chart:
TWIST Strategy
YALL DO-COLLABORATIVE LEARNING
Students work collaboratively to read and annotate The Lottery Ticket using our TWIST strategy looking closely for
tone, word choice, irony, style, and theme. They also close read looking for the how they can apply the four critical
theories to the text. After close reading, students use Nearpod to answer the following open-ended questions:
Describe the meaning of the work as a whole.
Which character has the most focus in the text? What significance would this have from a feminist literary
perspective?
How does the income level of the couple contribute to the plot? How would the storyline of the text change if
their social class was different?
Describe the manifestation of id, ego, and superego in the text.

While students worked, teacher circulates questioning and checking in on groups.

Guiding questions:
Why is it significant that the wife is not given a name in the text?
What are the desires of the husband? How do you know?
How does the authors tone contribute to your understanding of the text?
Are the desires of the couple repressed?

Exit Ticket:
Students will reflect on their own understanding of literary criticism by using the system below on their paper or
when they turn in the exit ticket.
1-I could explain it to someone else.
2-Im on the right track.
3-I need more practice.
Closing:
Teacher will redirect students to the objective in order to see if it was met. Teacher will inform students that the
following class, they will continue looking at prose passages in order to gain more understanding of how authors use
of language impacts the intended meaning of a piece.
