Lesson Title: Socialism vs Capitalism

Standard, Benchmark, Indicator Standard: Societies are shaped by beliefs, ideas, and diversity. Benchmark:
Students will be able to list qualities of both socialism and capitalism.
Indicator: The Edpuzzle quiz and class discussion after.
Lesson Goal Learn and value the important differences of capitalism and socialism and
their roles on different countries in history.
Lesson Objective Differentiate between countries with capitalism and socialism. Pros and
cons of both.
Essential Question(s) What do the effects of both capitalism and socialism look like on a country
throughout world history?

Assessment and Criteria Edpuzzle quiz, participation in class discussion, and through exit ticket a
grasp on the beginnings of both socialism and capitalism.

Time
of Task

Beginning 5 minutes Establishing the lesson of capitalism vs socialism. Through partner


discussion then class discussion see what students already know. Ask
What are some things we already know about Socialism or
Capitalism. Let kids discuss with a partner, then as a class write what the
students already know on the board,
Middle 20 minutes. Throughout the Crash Course history Video, ask questions that lead
students to higher level thinking about what they just saw in the video.
Using EdPuzzle, questions will pop up throughout the video. Make sure
students are paying attention and engaged to the video. Also lead them
closer to the lesson goal and objective.

End 15 minutes A class discussion over the video. What did you like and not like about
the video? What are the big take aways about Capitalism? Socialism?
What countires are some example of each? Which one works best?
Why?
